(heavy sigh)...looks like I might be the first "problem" case for the Bodyguard 380. I put in a snap cap, dry fired it, and a piece fell out of the back of the gun on to the floor. I'm new to semi-autos, but it looks to me to be the back end of the firing pin, the part with which the hammer makes contact. The piece that fell out appears to be sheared off fairly cleanly. I can't imagine how that could happen. Any thoughts (other than "don't be the first to buy a new model")?

P.S. More pics in the next post in this thread.

They are pumping out substandard poop. Ive seen it in revolvers and pistols

I have a whole new appreciation for my revolvers. Semi-autos look really cool and all that, but, when I pull the trigger on either of my revolvers, I get a "bang"....instead of a "click" or "clunk" as something drops out of the gun and falls to the floor.

COST CUTTING- It has snipped away S&W's reputation the last couple of years.
ex.'s: 15-22 ejectors, sigma triggers.

:eek::eek::eek:

To be fair, I really do not think it is a revolver vs. autoloader issue. Seems to me to be a QC and quality of raw materials issue. I have a S&W 4566 autoloader that has NEVER had a failure to feed or failure to extract/eject. Issues with revolvers as of late include IL caused failures, weak primer strikes out of the box, and the infamous barrel falling off scandium frame guns. http://smith-wessonforum.com/s-w-re...38621-329pd-kaboom-pics-new-pic-post-1-a.html

The used 60-10 that I just took back because the barrel came out of the frame at an angle causing it to shoot about a foot to the left at 15 yards says that not all revolvers are perfect. The M&P45c that I got with the refunded money has been great so far.

Same

Issues with my assembly pin coming out on mine. I'm contemplating whether to return it to the store and just get a ruger lcp.

Smith and Wesson is sending me out a shipping label also, but they said they wouldn't work on it for awhile since they are on some maintenance time until the 12th or so.

Not sure if I think it's reasonable to have such issues with a new gun from a manufacturer such as smith and wesson.

Mechanical failures happen all the time to all sorts of machinery. Just witness the failures of the space shuttles. If failure can happen to billion dollar equipment it can happen to anything.
That's why people carry multiple firearms.

Sigma triggers?? Last couple of years?? The Sigma has always been the way it is. And its the best selling Smith Auto isn't it?

Yes, but at least the space shuttle made it off the ground a few times.

It looks to be the firing pin safety plunger leg that extends out of the bottom of the slide (mimmed part of course). Lock back the slide, turn it over butt up and see if there is a 'white' metal plunger sticking out of slide. The lever is 'L' shaped and goes over the firing pin under the rear sight. If it be that...return to factory (return it anyway for checkup...it may not fire now)

Gend1, if I'm understanding correctly, I believe that the plunger that you mentioned is still in place. Looking at the underside of the slide, directly underneath the rear sight, but off to one side, is a spring loaded plunger. When I press it, I can see the "upward" (toward the rear sight) movement of a metal shelf that would catch the firing pin shaft and prevent forward movement, if the firing pin shaft was still in one piece. I'll try to take some pictures later (probably tomorrow) to post.

I was thinking about one. I shot my brothers lcp 380 and didn't care much for it. Think I'll wait a while

Follow-up on the problem at the beginning of this thread:

--Called S&W on Monday, Aug 2.
--Received a shipping label on Thursday, Aug 5.
--Shipped it out the same day (Aug 5).
--Received it back on Wednesday, Aug 25.

The enclosed letter from S&W was blank: a header, a footer, and nothing in between. Called S&W, and the Customer Service Rep had no details about the repair in his computer.

The firing pin shaft clearly was replaced, and the safety activation lever was replaced. Not sure what else might have been done, but the trigger feels a bit lighter than it was previously. Maybe I'm imagining that.

The right-side laser button (very difficult to activiate) was not repaired. In fact, it was worse. I have since swapped the right and left laser buttons, and done a little fiddling with the right button to get it to work properly. The left button now is difficult to activiate because it has the "bad" right button. I think that rubber button itself is out of spec, as the center post inside the button clearly is too short to be of much use. I will call S&W again today to request some extra buttons.

I haven't yet had the opportunity to go to the range to shoot the pistol. I've had it for a month, but most of that time was spent with it in repair. I'm a bit concerned about the take-down pin retention problem that many have described. I'll provide an update once I've been to the range.
