I believe any spurred hammer from a full size 3rd gen will fit, but you`ll have to keep the original hammer strut for it to work properly.

The hammer from a 5906 will work, you can use the original hammer strut or shorten the strut that comes with the 5906 hammer. I have done both and they work well.

I have a question on this swap. When swapping the hammer strut from one hammer to another, does the pin drift out? Size? I don't want to damage it. If anybody has pictures it would be greatly appreciated.

I like the idea of swapping out the spur-less hammer, especially on the larger 6906, but have never gotten up the courage to change it. Detail stripping a 1911 is about the limit of my gunsmithing skills; quite frankly, the 3rd gens intimidate me.
I learned to shoot DA/SA back in the day with a 39-2 and a Walther P 1. I was taught to use the decock lever but to ease the hammer down with my thumb. Seeing that hammer slam forward gave me the willies.
No doubt this decocking process was a holdover from the concern of WW2 era Walthers that had suspect heat treatment for the firing pin block. I'm sure it's totally unnecessary with modern steel and QC. Still, old habits and thought processes are hard a-dying.
I also remember one of the early issues of American Handgunner that did several stories on the S&W 39. A very young Massad Ayoob had fulsome praise for the gun. Rather than using the DA trigger for his first shot, he would cock the hammer during presentation and sweep his thumb down to get it out of the way of the recoiling slide. This way he didn't have to deal with the transition from double action to single.

I made a hammer trade between a 910 and a 6906 because I wanted the spurred hammer on the 6906 I planned to keep. The pins that hold the hammer to the strut indeed drift out, and can be re-used. The struts remained with their original pistol, and I just exchanged the hammers.

Check with Midway, Brownells, Numrich or Slinks Gun Parts. Sometimes they'll show up in the for sale section here.

Swapping hammers is not a difficult task, but remember that if you use holsters with a strap across the hammer, those holsters may not work with a spur hammer.

I swapped my 6906 hammer a little over a year ago. Wanted a hammer I could thumb cock. The one I bought (39? 59? I'm not sure) had the long strut. I did not want to swap in the 6906 strut. I need to keep the original parts original. I scribed the 6906 strut length and shape onto the new one. A few passes on a grinder and the polishing brush, cutting it to fit, it works fine.
