I'm looking at a cheifs specail 40 cal. Anything I should check for. I have 2 third gen smiths and love them just wondering if the cheif is a good gun Thanks all Dan

I own a CS9 and it's a fabulous little pistol. I know several people who own the CS40 and CS45, one owns all three and the various versions within the calibers. All really do like the guns. I know of no problems that anyone has had with any of them. Wish I could say more, but that's it.

Buy it before someone else does. Great gun- nothing else like it on the market of the same quality and size, except maybe a Kimber Solo.

I purchased a CS40 a couple of years ago trying to fill a gap for me; however it didn't work out the way I expected. This was of no fault of the pistol however. The pistol was accurate, reliable and ran like a sewing machine. There was absolutely nothing wrong with the pistol.

It never fit the intended purpose of the pistol in spite of its reliablity. I was looking for a compact pistol, something that might have been smaller in size to a Shorty 40 and a little lighter. This seemed like a logical fit; Shorty 40: 27 ozs. (empty), CS40 22 - 23 ozs. (empty).

With the scarsity of these pistol I purchased it off of pictures I was sent, the pistol was as advertised and as stated above reliable as any 3rd gen pistol I own. After I received the pistol I compared it to a Shorty 40 (4013) and there was really no comparison.

The Shorty 40 has a trimmer slide and shorter grip frame than the CS40; this effectively made the Shorty 40 a better concealment pistol for me. The only place where the CS40 won out is in overall width with the Shorty 40 being a double stack pistol. To illustrate size here was my CS40 next to an early 4003:



With the CS40 being the same physical size as the 45 there aren't a lot of reasons to purchase one unless you are like me and own 40s and no shooting 45s. It just didn't work out for me looking for a smallish 40 pistol, the CS40 went to a good home (S&W Forum member) and will be appreciated for some time to come. It just wasn't what I was looking for. In the end I puchased a M&P40c to fill the bill for a small 40 to meet my needs; it fits well as a utility pistol which is what I was searching for.

I hear what you're saying. I acquired a CS40 last month, as much to go with my CS9 as because I needed it. Took it to the range for the first time on the 4th and it's a great pistol, but a little on the stout side. As you said, the same size (same frame & slide, in fact, IIANM) as the CS45.

On the other hand, I also have a 4040PD which is a great little concealed carry weapon. It's the same size as a 3913, with a scandium frame -- light, compact, smooth, accurate & delivers a .40 caliber punch.

Thanks everyone, I bought it today. Got 6 magazines and factory blue plastic box with it. I think I like My 6906 better but time will tell it is in almost perfect shape, I'll put some pics up tomorrow. Thanks again Dan

Wow. You're lucky you got so many mags for your CS. I own a CS45 and I'm very hard pressed to find any extra mags.

S&W has CS45 mags in stock. I recently bought two from them.
