I am new to this forum and have a question.
Last night I purchased a S&W model 4026 and have been looking for information on the internet about this and all I have been able to find is not much,,,

Made between 1991 and 1993, and maybe 300 - 400 produced?
Has a "decocker" in place of a safety. Is the decocker on all 4026 models?.
What is the value of this unit ??
first 2 numbers of model # is caliber, last is alloy, what is 3rd number represent?

The guy claimed to shoot less than 100 rounds thru it, no wear visible, looks like brand new. Would be greatfull to any info that you have for me..Thanks

Welcome to the forum.

It has a decock lever mounted on the frame instead of a manual safety lever, which also decocks the hammer. There are safeties in a 4026.

All of the xx2x models (and the xx7x) have frame mounted decock levers.

The third number is 'type of model'; 0=standard, 4=DAO, etc..

Here's what the numbers mean:

3rd Generation Model Codes

39xx = single stack 9mm
59xx = double stack 9mm
69xx = compact double stack 9mm
10xx = 10mm
40xx = .40 S&W
45xx = .45 ACP

xx0x = full length barrel TDA
xx1x = compact barrel TDA
xx2x = full length barrel Frame Decocker
xx3x = compact barrel Frame Decocker
xx4x = full length barrel DAO
xx5x = compact barrel DAO
xx6x = mid size barrel TDA
xx7x = mid size barrel Frame Decocker
xx8x = mid size barrel DAO
xx9x = Special Order

xxx0 = Scandium frame
xxx3 = Alloy frame silver
xxx4 = Alloy frame black
xxx5 = Steel frame blue
xxx6 = Stainless frame
xxx7 = Stainless frame Slide Decocker
xxx8 = Special Order

As for value, it's worth what anyone will pay for it I guess. Some are paying $600 for a new Shield while others pay $335.

For yours I would expect it is worth somewhere around $500. I'm no expert, but that's what the third gen 40's seem to go for in great shape. Maybe the rarity makes it worth more, I'll let one of our experts comment on that.

The 4026 is one of my favorite 3rd gens now.

I picked one up in LNIB shape with two mags at a gun show a year ago, and really enjoy shooting it. It was my first .40, and it now makes me kick myself for waiting so long to get one.

What's the serial number prefix on yours? It can't be too far away from my VCT77xx .

I have since added a two-tone CS40 for something smaller and lighter in .40 S&W, just installed the longer style Big Dog grips on it, and it gets carried in a great little "Half Breed" belt slide holster from 'oldflatfoot' aka Bell Charter Oak Holsters.

The decocker was a Sig Sauer design and Smith had to quit using it, thus they quit making the 4026. The KCMO Police department used them in the early 90's but switched to the S&W Sigma 40 cal. after Smith quit making the 4026. Our 4026's were engraved with our badge and KCPD, when the switch was made we were given the option to stay with the 4026 or go to Sigma. I stayed with the 4026 even after the PD went to Glocks later. I used it until I retired in 2004 and still use it in the small town where I am the Chief ( and only cop in town, lol)
The fact that the weapon can not fire with the mag out saved one of our officers life. He was jumped and bad guy got his gun, but during the struggle the officer popped out the mag and tossed it. The bad guy pulled the trigger while pointing it at the officer but to no avail.

FWIW, my 4026 wasn't shipped until early 2000, per S&W.

Did you work for KCPD? My dad has the same 4026 with the engraving. I want to say he left KCPD in 2003-4

That was tgg's only post so it looks like he has left the building some years ago. But if you have a chance to post pics of your dad's pistol we would love to see it. Was it issued with box and whatnot? Mine is VADxxxx with no department markings. I believe later ones were issued without the engraving but without a factory letter I'll assume it has no special provenance.

Welcome to the Forum!
