Slide Holster for 4506-1
I've searched through older threads but still have a question. When I'm out walking and not really interested in concealing, I've carried my 4506-1 in an Uncle Mike's Sidekick size 5 holster. But I'll be starting a job in which I'll be behind the counter at a gun shop. I'd like to have a holster that lets the gun ride high on my right hip with the gun held only around the slide and trigger guard. Again, not interested in concealment. Is that called a "slide holster"? Who makes one for the 4506-1? Actually, I know a lot of companies make them but was wondering who's had good experience with what brand.

Look for a yaqui slide. They are made by most if not all the big gunleather makers. I use one on occasion. However, I use a Jak Slide most of the time. A Jak Slide rides inside the belt or between the belt & pants. I happen to use Galco's version but Milt Sparks makes a nice one too, there may be others. Either way you need a strong stiff belt to get the best performance from these minimalist holsters.
Cheers
Bill

I've got a Bulldog beltslide I bought at Cabelas for 19.00 and it fits all my autos from my 645 to my Star Ultrastar. Really nice holster.

BTDT, you want your pistol in a full holster with a thumb snap. Behind the counter means the stock room, the storage safe, bending, stooping, reaching, lifting heavy boxes, and generally bumping into things.
Behind the counter does not always mean behind the counter. Sometimes you have to leave the safety of the behind the counter and go provide customer service in the accessories isle.
Unless your goal is to be one of the "Look at me I'm packing heat" types seen in so many shops concealed is the better choice. It was required by the owner of the shop where I worked. Better to keep the ill-intentioned guessing, he believed.

I think a slide holster is probably not the ideal choice for open carry, even in a place like a gun store.
I'm an advocate of retention in a holster (active retention, not just passive) when you're open carrying. But, that's just me. I think a holster with more substance gives you a better chance that it will better distribute the weight of the 4506-1.
Just my $0.02, though.

Thanks for the replies!
From what I've heard here, I'm thinking that at minimum the holster should have a thumb break release.

Doesn't necessarily have to have a thumb break but if you're going to open carry then weapon retention becomes a consideration.
A good belt is also the other part of this equation that cannot be overstated.
