Anyone I.D. this 39-2?

I believe it is an Austin Behlert modified Mod 39. He modified 59s as well. Is the rear sight milled into the slide? The one I handled had front and rear sights milled into the slide. The "lightening" cuts on the slide are similar to DEVEL guns. I'm not sure which gun came first.

The adjustable rear sight on the Devel gun pictured to the Left top is S&W optional sight. I bought one which is on my 39-2. It snaps into the original sight cut out. It is in the 39-2 parts diagram. I never saw one that came with it. It was on backorder a long time.

I don't think that's a Behlert pistol. He marked his with his name, used the rear sight from a K frame revolver, and had a way more pronounced hook on the trigger guard. Plus the front bevel on the slide is something i've never seen on a Behlert built pistol, it kinda looks like a Beretta shaped slide....

I would have incorrectly guessed Asp.
Then again, I'm not very knowledgeable about Smith autos.
I just know I like them.

The slide is consistent with Behlert, and I just bought it! Boom.
flagman1776: You are correct about the S&W rear sight. The one on my 59 is an MMC and was a DEVEL option according to Wayne Novak

I'll definately post pics when it gets to my FFL. Unfortunately, I did not have a pistol permit, so I have to put in for some. Even though my organization controls the firearms licensing in my state, it will still take me about 2 MONTHS to get them. How sad is that?

I do not remember if Austin Belhert used his signature installation of a S&W revolver sight on his 39 based custom pistols. I still own the 1911A1 that I had him install a K frame revolver sight on the slide. But the M39 has small parts under the rear sight... so this remains an open question.
I'll be very interested in what maker did this superb custom pistol.

I will have to retract my earlier statement against it being a Behlert, after a quick internet search I found many pics of that exact slide contour, and even an identical Behlert built pistol to the one pictured....as for the K frame rear sight, I have personally seen two model 39/59 Behlert customs with it.....and I see after my search that he also used the rear sight pictured, sort of Novak looking but colored the same as the slide...looks like you got a smokin' deal on that one....

Yes, it's nice to get thrown a bone every once in awhile (thanks again vegasgunhand). I handled one of these 39s at a gun show in PA about 10 years ago. I was looking for a DEVEL at the time, so passed on it. I remember thinking it looked sort of crude compared to the ASP and DEVEL. I didn't realize it would take me a decade find another one.

Finally was able to pick it up.

Here are some pics of my Behlert "mini combat" 39-2. It's in really nice shape. It bears more than a little resemblance to the DEVEL modified 39/59 Full-House guns, so I thought it would be fun to compare them. Some observations:
1) The Behlert DA trigger pull is hands down lighter than either of my 39 or 59 DEVELs.
2) The Behlert 39-2 has the magazine disconnect disabled; the DEVEL 39 retains this safety feature.
3) Magazine capacities are 7+1 for each gun.
4) The Behlert uses a fixed rear sight. Though it looks tiny, the rear notch is actually wider than the DEVEL gun, and allows a good amount of light around the front sight.
5) Both guns utilize "lightening cuts" on the slide. The DEVEL guns have the front bushing silver-soldered on, while the Behlert uses a removeable bushing.
6) DEVEL 39s have a small roller in the magazine well, just under the feed ramp. This modification was done to keep the top round in the magazine from working its way forward during recoil. The Behlert does not have this feature.
7) Both guns have a squared off trigger guard. The DEVEL gun has a pronounced hook, and is relieved for a right-handed shooter. The Behlert's hook is much less pronounced.
I'm not sure which gun came out first. If anyone has any old Behlert catalogs with this gun listed, could you PM me? Thanks. Both are great guns. Can't wait to try it out at the range next week. Anyway, here are some pics:
