I have a chance to buy a really nice S&W 4006. The grips have a bad spot on them. Can anyone tell me if these grips are readily available and how hard are they to install? Thanks

Until recently factory grips were readily available from midwayusa, s&w, brownells, etc for around $17-20. Now no one seems to have any in stock. New and used grips are often on ebay, sometimes at a premium price, but if you are patient they can be found at normal prices. Grips are also listed in the classifieds section from time to time. 5900 series grips also fit 4000 series pistols. The straight and curved backstrap grips are interchangeable. Simply drive out the pin to remove grip. Use some care not to break off the inner tabs when changing. Look in the magwell (no mag) to see the tabs. Dont let the damaged grips on the one your looking at scare you off, replacements can be had. Hogue also makes wood and rubber grips too..though they are a bit wider than factory.

Sometimes you can get factory grips on Midway.com (product # 852351) but currently out of stock with no backorder. You can get Hogue rubber grip panels on various websites (Hogue # 40010).

I have the Hogue rubber grips on my 5906. (they came on the gun) They feel CHUNKY to me just holding it. Pretty good feel when shooting. There are videos on changing the grips. Here is a picture version. Bob

As has been stated, hogues are everywhere (wood and rubber). I would never use them, way too thick. Had a 4586 that came with them and they made it feel as thick as a Glock.

Your options for replacements are....

#1 Get lucky and find new OEM grips in stock somewhere.

#2 Buy a used set from someone upgrading to something else.

#3 Get a Pachmayr (or other slim style) slip on grip to cover the factory grip.

#4 Get real lucky and find some Uncle Mike's or Pachmayr grips. I've only seen a few sets of the Pachmayr 5900/4000 series over the years and the Uncle Mike's have not been built in several years.

I keep two new sets of the Uncle Mike's grips, just in case I ever find a 5900/4000 series gun I really want.
