Total number of experimental/prototype 4006s made?
The S&W letter posted by the OP (thanks!) about his 4006 has some interesting info but would appear to only address part of the experimental/prototype 4006 pistols S&W made.
At first reading you might think the letter implies only (10) experimental/prototype 4006's were made (X584-X593) but the fact that the APR-1990 cover of Shooting Times (in post #7 above) shows an experimental 4006 with SN# X521 would challenge that.
The letter states that range (X584-X593) all had adjustable sights. The Shooting Times 4006 clearly has fixed sights so some additional number of 4006s were obviously made, but how many?
We could foolishly make an assumption but there are (63) numbers between X521 & X584 which leaves a lot of assuming to make.
Additionally the only experimental 4006 pictures posted showed pistols with spurred hammers. The OPs has a bobbed-hammer. Were the (X584-X593) pistols just a batch to test bobbed-hammer / adjustable rear sight combinations?
It sure would have been nice, considering the OPs paid for request for historical data focused on an experimental model's serial number, if S&W could have provided a more complete listing of the total number of experimental 4006 models made rather that leaving us with the implication that only (10) were made.
