Read an article about stippling Glock grips, which are part of their frame, with a soldering iron pin tip. Looked good and I am sure it would improve the earlier Glock's grip. The 4th generation Glocks have a better grip but you guys don't care. Have any of you tried stippling a Smith 3rd generation grip? I have some old LE grips that I may try the process after I get a soldering iron.

Can't see it personally, but I'll admit that I am not a soldering iron stippling kind of guy. I know more people with "stippling regret" than stippling joy. But it's a plastic gun fad... and I am mostly an all-metal gun person.

I will take exception to the notion that the Gen 4 Glocks and RTF Glocks don't matter. I could never even hold a Glock securely in my hand before the rough textured frame and Gen 4's came along. Now they work for me just fine.

I just use Hogue rubber grips

It works......I used a soldering pen with fine point tip....same one I use for electronic work.........go slow

Glock... Perfection.

I just find it passing strange that they are now on their fourth generation of "perfection".

I think I might try the stippling on my spare set of 3913TSW grips to see how it works.

I've done many of them. I go through ROBAR. They know how to do them. I have in fact, several there now awaiting the jobs. It takes them about 2 months. Not sure how they do it. I think it's a thermal chemical process myself. I like their work.

Gary...before you torch some stock stocks...I can send you mine to try.......unless you just get really bored over the long weekend and need a project

Stippling...ugh.

I think it even looks ugly on a Glock.

If you MUST take a soldering iron to a weapon,
at least use a woodburning kit with switchable tips...
and put a dang DESIGN on it instead.

I've thought about getting some new grips for mine, and getting some ratty old grips for mine. The new ones will be for nice.
The ratty grips will be for stippling.
I've thought about using the round paddle tip of my plastic welder to do one. I'm thinking a fish scale pattern.

Ugly? Absolutely.
Grippy? Very.

I may even coat a pair with spray-on bedliner for better grip.
Blasphemy, I know. That's why I want to use ratty old ones.

Stippling isn't for looks. If you plan of doing it to a carry piece, you may want to explore other options. It will tear your side up!! Made that mistake once and never will again. The grip though on a good stipple job is second to none. I practiced with an old pmag.

I've got enough worn out take-offs from LEO trade-ins to experiment with. Not likely to use the 5946s and 4046s for other than range toys anyway so why not? From what I've read of the process you can leave as stippled for super traction or you can tone it down some with a light sanding and quick pass with a torch or heat gun.

The third gens are fairly limited when it comes to grip options(not unlike the Glocks,....whatever they are). I think the stippling is a nice option to have. I probably wouldn't sacrifice a nice set of grips, but I have a box full that wouldn't bring $5 each as-is.

Instead of stippling or putting some hogues on and adding unnecessary width, I chose to go a different route. I picked up some traction tape from a local hardware store. I originally was just going to put a strip on the front strap of my 908s but I liked it so much I ended up doing the grip too. I think I might have to do the same on my 4513. The nice thing about the traction tape is if you change your mind or decide you don't like it, you can easily just take it off.

The brand I got is Gator Grip traction tape but I'm sure any brand would work. I picked up the 1 inch roll since originally I was just going to do the front strap but if I was doing it again I'd get the 2 inch wide roll. With the 2 inch roll you should be able to cut out one piece to fit on the side of the grip. The 1 inch roll was about an 1/8" to short to make one solid piece.

Total agreement on the traction tape/grip tape/skateboard tape for gun grips! Like you said, when it starts to wear out, just rip it off and put a new piece on. I usually put a bit of superglue around the edges to keep things from sliding around as well, though it doesn't improve the looks much.

I've considered doing some stippling before to the back of the grips, but since I have plenty of grip tape in the drawer I'll probably just stick to that. Stippling seems to produce a rougher surface than I would like anyways.

Thanks. I found a product made specifically for firearms that's pretty reasonable. Once it comes, I'll give it a try, and of course post pictures.

Here are the results of my efforts.

I used a product called Gun Tape GT-5000 that I found on Amazon.

I actually followed the instructions exactly and think that I got decent results.

This is a "before" picture showing the pattern I made using painters tape and index card stock. The pattern is then traced onto the backing of the gun tape itself. I used regular scissors for the cutting, but I wish I had an Xacto knife for fine trim.



Left side of the gun. I didn't try to cut to conform to the little "notch" at the bottom of the 3913TSW grip. Too much work with no benefit.



Right side of the gun. I suppose I could have just gone straight up and covered the S&W logo, but I wanted to make the gun tape coverage match the factory "stippling" as closely as possible.



I also covered the small stippled area on the back strap of the grip.

I think this is a significant improvement over the factory gripping surface. No slippery feeling like with the factory grip.

My only question is the durability. This is my most frequently carried firearm, so if I can get a year out of it, I'll be happy.

I like a tape that is made by 3M and is used as treads on metal surfaces or ladders. It is available on Amazon and a roll will last a lifetime. The effect makes for a much more gripable surface, and the tape removes cleanly.

Gary that looks good.....is that grip tape a rubber feel or a granular emery cloth feel.....I had the rubber Talon grips on my Shield and I really liked that feel and they added almost no girth to the grip EDIT: answered my own question by looking at the product on Amazon......thanks
