Hello new member here from Georgia and just purchased pistol in title. The pistol has the Trijicon tritium night sights on it and I would like to change the front sight to a fiber optic green sight. Can someone please tell me the height of the front sight from top of slide ? I have no way to measure this.

Thank you

Cant answer your question but where gonna need some pics of your 1911 or it never happened. Welcome to the forum..

I have the same gun and just measured my front sight height from the bottom of the dovetail to the top of the sight's blade to be 0.283" to 0.289" - I can't get the same reading twice due to unsteadiness but that ought to get you in the right ballpark.

As bronco45 said, call the manufacturer of the sight you want. I can't figure out how to contact Novak any more, but the customer service people at Ed Brown and Wilson answer the phone and they know their stuff, in my experience.
You gun appears very similar to mine, which is a slightly different model.
The top of my front sight is 4mm/.157". I don't know if you can get a fiber optic sight that sits that low.
You COULD order based on that, or do your own comparison online, but I found that not everything is as it appears, and not everyone measures from the same point.
I am changing the sights on a Delta Elite and a call to Ed Brown got me exactly what was needed to be sure the sights were matched.

Repeating what bronco45 said, call.

Thanks for the input guys, I have e-mailed S&W and Trijicon, haven't got an answer from S&W. Trijicon said S&W make their own sights and they just put the Tritium in the sights for them.

Dawson Precision has fiber optic front sight that will work or he will make them. The measurement he want's is top of slide to top of front sight.

BaldShooter, I noticed you have a set of CT Lasergrips, with an ambi safety. I did not think that was possible. Is the Safety modified, or do they now make the grips that fit an ambi safety?

btw, cool 1911.

They where direct fit, I just put them on and the elevation was dead on at 15 yards and made slight adjustment to windage.

Thank you

BaldShooter, I am thinking about doing this to my GI Colt 5". I can't see the GI sights anymore. Do you mind if I ask how much it cost?

Measurements

Hey everyone. So even though I started as a Ruger owner, and have changed pistols quite a bit since then, I'm soon to be the proud owner of a PC1911 bobtail with 4.25" barrel. I really don't care for the orange and black G-10 grips and am wanting to order some customs. Does anyone know if the grip screws are spaced like a full size or a compact? As I don't have the gun in hand yet, I have no way to know for sure. (It's on layaway at Cabela's)
Also wanting to switch out the plain Jane sights for night sights as this will be my carry gun. Any suggestions that won't break the bank account like the gun did? I think for the price of this model, it should come with night sights! Any help in the right direction will be much appreciated.

measuring sight height

A dial caliper, non digital, from the hardware store or Sears is not expensive. I see them online for $25 and they will be plenty accurate for this. You likely have friends from whom you could borrow one, too.

Measure from the bottom of the slide to the top of the slide, and from the bottom of the slide to the top of the sight. Measure it several times until you get at least two consistent measures.

When you buy, BE SURE you're getting the exact same size. It is worth calling the manufacturer/seller and having them verify it for you. I don't know the "why" of it, but it seems not everyone measures the same way. I think you can't just go by what's on the label.

I recently changed the front sight on a Colt Delta Elite, ordering the stated EXACT height (.018"), BUT, after installation it is just a little taller, so I have to set the rear sight full-down to match it for closer targets. I did not think to measure it just to be sure, before installation. The next lower sight, as sold, is too low.

I wrote up all the changes I made to two Delta Elites that I will publish on the Colt Forum and here, after a range session, and after my editor is through shredding my prose. (And saving me from dreadful boo boos.)
