Can anyone tell me the Size, length of the grip screws for the Model 41?
I would like to order some from Tombstone Gun Grips, but am not sure of the size.
I ordered a new set of grips from Engineered Accessories, it came with the screws but I need the escutcheons.
I just figured I would buy the "set" (screws and escutcheons) but I don't know if I should order the 5-40 screw kit, 4-40 Screw kit, 2-56 screw kit?
Total length of the screw I received with the grips is 1 1/16 in length, I don't know what the thread pitch is.
Any help appreciated.

S&W model 41 Grip Screw

Thanks for the reply,
The ones offered for sale don't seem to be the same as the originals. I guess I will just try and find some "new" ones that will fit through the holes in the frame as I don't want to alter the frame.
BTW the new grips are great looking and fit perfectly, I just need the right screws escutcheons.

S&W Model 41 Grip screws

I did call S&W and they told me they no longer carry them for the older model 41's. She said their grips are now made by (I believe) Altamont and that the "new" screws wouldn't fit??
That's why I looked at Numrich (product# 364480) and Midway (product # 259467)
Tombstone gun grips also says they have screw kits ( Screws and escutcheons) but list 3 different kits which is why I was confused as to which one would be correct. Tombstone lists three kits.
1.) 5-40 screw kit
2.) 4-40 screw kit
3.) 2-56 screw kit.
Tombstone allows you to select the from several different screw lengths, but doesn't give you the screw thickness. All their escutcheons seem to be .25" which I believe would fit most grips.
Midways description of Product # 259467 seems to be the closest to the originals with screw length = 1.10", Thickness of screw = .2", and escutcheons = .25"
So I think I will order a couple from them and give it a try.

Thanks for the replies.

If the thickness of the screw at Midway is .2"...that would be huge. Too big in diameter to fit through the hole in the grip frame. The original screw diameter is .096"
The 2x56 kit at Tombstone might work...it would be small enough in diameter. The only issue will be if the screw is long enough. The screw needs to be at least 1.100" long.

Perhaps you could give Tombstone a call.

Also, it looks like Numrich has an aftermarket screw with the escutcheons, and some of the original OEM screws.

I must be missing something here. You ordered the grips from Tombstone and they can't tell you which screw kit you need?

Tom S.
The grips came from "Handgun Grips" with screws, but no Escutcheons which is why I am searching for the correct screws and escutcheons.
Why someone would sell new grips without ALL the hardware I don't know.
I would have gladly paid a few $$$ more to have all the hardware shipped with the grips.

Well,
I may have solved my problem....the grips were supposed to come with the escutcheons installed ( they are not) so I sent some photo's and an email to Handgun grips. I am waiting their response and will keep the forum posted.

S&W Model 41 Grip screws

I have been exchanging emails with "Handgun Grips" and they are sending me a new "complete" set of grips with a return label to return the grips I have so they can inspect them. Handgun grips has been very good with their communications and I will incur no costs in this exchange. So I am happy with their customer service.

Always nice to find a company who hasn't forgotten what customer service is supposed to be. Even nicer to report them here so others will be drawn to buy from them. :)

Follow up on Grip Screws for Model 41

I received my replacement grips today with all hardware intact.
I am very happy with the fit and finish.
I sent back the original set of grips so they can inspect them and figure out how a set of grips got out the door without all the hardware.

Re: S&W Model 41 Grip Screws

Just a FYI for anyone looking to replace their original grips screws in the older Model 41.
The following do NOT work!
Numrich Product # 364450 (Screw diameter too large)
Midway Product # 259467 (Screw Diameter too large)

I just ordered the 2-56 screw kit from Tombstone Gun Grips these "should" work. You can order the screws in several lengths. I ordered 1.25 length and will cut them to fit once I test fit them.
The description of the set is below:
The brass mounting hardware fits into a 1/4-in diameter hole and provides ample support for the screw in a thin grip. A .092 hole through the counter bore allows the No.2 screw to pass through the grips, and a counterbore of .150 diameter allows room for alignment with the grip holes and frame hole in certain guns.
I will post if these screws fit correctly.

I finally found grip screws to fit my Model 41. I thought I would post this picture for anyone else who is looking for grips screws. The #2 screws fit the through the frame on my Model 41 and they can be ordered in different lengths and be cut to fit flush.

So, I was looking into getting some grip screws for my M41.

my research revealed that they are #3 X 48 X 1" with a Filister head.

Seem to be VERY hard to get thru the normal channels.

But I did find THIS !! ( while not "filister head" they are philips )
Pickup Height Screw for Humbucker | stewmac.com

They may be a little bit too long, but easy to trim if needed.

Different colour options also available ( black, silver, gold )
Arrived today and fit perfectly

Too Much $$$$

I just checked the Tombstone website for a set of screws which were priced OK. But the $48 International Shipping option was too much. Geez, a couple of bucks worth of stamps for $9 worth of screws. Gasp

Jim,

I’m glad you got your screw problem solved and it’s nice to see Handgun Grips quickly correct their mistake.

FYI - your pistol likely was shipped from S&W in the fall of 1981. The closest I have to your pistol is number A718307 that was shipped in November 1981. But remember that S&W did not always ship in serial number order.

You have the hard to find and very desirable 5” field barrel that appears to be contemporary to the pistol. This is my favorite barrel for the model 41 and is a joy to shoot! Have fun with it.
