With frequent, rough handed disassembly/reassembly, the tips can get buggered up and they can start to get nasty looking.
But no failures in service that I'm aware of.

Just to be clear, you did say 4513/4516 (later) guide rods which take the dual springs like the 457.
The earlier 4516 single spring guide rod is not interchangeable.

Tell ya what, Gary: you keep shooting your 457 the way you have been, whatever way that is, and keep cleaning it now and again, and if your plastic guide rod ever wears out or fails to function properly, I'll buy you a new one.

The 4516-1 is the single spring model with the large diameter (.290") guide rod vs. the dual/nested spring model's smaller (.237") diameter guide rod.

Sounds like vigil617 has a lot of faith in those original plastic guide rods. Good to know.

This is a bit off topic but I think relevant. I have a Sig P239 that came new with a plastic guide rod. I'd say that after 200 rounds the rim of the rod started to show significant wear (deformation) and after about 500 rounds it no longer appeared functional. I was pleased to receive one made of steel when I ordered new. Apparently Sig was not happy with the performance of their plastic guide rods.

If I am not mistaken, the early 457 that is roll marked has the metal guide rod.
The later 457 with the laser engraving has a plastic guide rod.
I just now removed the slide from an early roll marked 457, it has an all metal small diameter guide rod with the duel captured springs.
I have laser engraved 457's also but they are locked away.

I own a later-production, laser-marked 457 and it came with a metal guide rod with a plastic plunger. I've never actually seen a plastic 457 guide rod, but believe they would have been on the earlier models. As long as they still sported the dual recoil springs, I don't see why a metal guide rod wouldn't work as a substitute.
I've had no major issues with the plastic guide rods on any of my 908's, and prefer to use them in those guns.
FWIW, Midway has metal guide rods for the 457 in stock for around $12, so a spare one in the parts bin wouldn't break the bank.

Only 2 left I see... so any Model 457 owner who feels they might need one someday should probably grab one before they disappear!
