A friend has a clean 4586 that he wants to part with. He is asking $500. I don't have many 3rd gen Smiths and even fewer 45s. Should I pick this up? Seems like an interesting gun .... DOA full-size.
Thoughts?

Technically they are, to use Colt's terminology, Commander size, not full size. I own one. I bought it after giving up on my hunt for a full size Model 4546. While 4546s are scarce, enough police departments bought 4586s for them to be common. About 10 years ago there were great deals on police surplus 4586s. Most had holster rub marks and or bright spots where snaps were in contact while holstered. "Clean" is to vague for me to understand whether your friend's 4586 spent 15 years in police holsters or, like mine, was seldom even handled and fired on no more than 3 occasions. The reason my 4586 was set aside is because after buying it I found a used 4546.

Also, there are two significantly different 4586 variations. Early ones had slides and frames that were longer in the rear to cover hammers staged further back. Consequently their DA pull is shorter than later 4586s. To create a more economical parts inventory Later 4586s used the same frames and slides as traditional double action (TDA) 4566s. Later pistols can be switched from TDA to DA only or vise-versa by changing parts. Early DA only 3rd generation pistols are more desirable to me.

As a self defense gun they are ultra reliable and idiot proof. Their weight is a mixed blessing. They have low recoil that makes them easier to shoot accurately but they weighs down light belts.

By the way, my 4586 new with night sights was $580 + tax in 1996.

If it's in good shape offer him $450 & see what he says. If it's in great shape & comes with the box & a couple mags, go for it! :D

I bought one because I got tried of waiting to find a nice 4566 at a fair price. I'm happy I got mine.

It's now my "45ACP sledgehammer". I gave it a full spring set refresh & went with a heavier recoil so I can shoot 45 Super in it.

I was surprised how easily you can get used to the DAO trigger after a few rounds & mine has a smooth pull.

Hope you enjoy it if you get it.

I have 4 3rd Gen 45s and I love each of them. They are accurate, super reliable and a true pleasure to look at. I've never had a DAO version but if a nice one comes along at a decent price, then count me it!

If the seller is a friend, why try to under cut him offering $50.00 less ?

Because that's what I felt it would be worth to me if it was in good shape. You're not obligated to pay someone's asking price if you think it's high, no matter who it is. Wasn't the OP looking for opinions anyway?

Conversely, I learned a long time ago to not sell my guns to "friends" or in-laws at a price lower than what I'd sell it to someone I don't know. When I did, they turned around & sold it for a profit.

Did you really think you would be getting told not to buy it from this group of enablers?
=) I knew everyone would say to buy it but I want to see if it was a 'GO BUY IT NOW' gun or a
... 'Meh see if you can get $50 off' type of deal.
I think I'm going to pass. Thanks everyone for their input.

This is where I come down. $500 complete with the works or more like $450 without.

But at the same time, I wouldn't want to spoil a friendship over $50. That would be silly. :p

Well, as you can see I didn't pass on this pristine baby back in late 2016. I jumped on this beauty for around $600, but that's based on Southern California prices. And you know what, I would do it again in heart beat. ;) This was my first and only S&W 3rd Gen DAO. I was pleasantly surprised at how natural it felt while shooting it. :)
