I have long been a fan of the Gen 3 Since Stack 9mm S&W semi-auto pistols. The two things that keep me from absolutely loving them and owning all of them: 1) Slide Mounted Safety 2) DA/SA operating system.

Slide mounted safeties really add unnecessary bulk to the gun, especially when they are ambidextrous! So I'm partial to the models that only have the safety on the left side. I have tried the DAO models, but the reset is wayyyyy to long for the semi-auto shooting I do. The DAO trigger on the Gen 3 Semi Autos would be great if it was a revolver! But not so great for a semi. Since we are talking about triggers, I must say the Gen 3 DA/SA are superb as far as this operating system goes. One of the shortest and crispest resets I have ever encountered on a DA/SA trigger.

What I have found myself doing over the last decade is buying a Gen 3 9mm keeping it for a few months, then selling it. Over the course of the last 10 years or so I have purchased two 3913 Lady Smith's (one was an NL model), two regular 3913, and even one of the double stack Gen 3 9mm pistols (I forget which one). I even had a 457 (45acp) at one point. As I said, I kept them all for a bit and then sold them off. I bought them because I came across them at such attractive prices, I couldn't resist. One of the 3913 Lady Smith's, the NL version, was like new and I paid $325 for it about 5 years ago. It was on Gunbroker and mislabeled as a 3919! I was the only bidder.

Anyway, I always looked at them and compared them to my S&W Shield and felt the Shield did everything better. With the Shield there is no slide mounted safety, no DA/SA trigger to complicate things, better handling/ergonomics, and the color of the gun is correct :) I don't love Stainless/Silver semi-autos either. Too flashy. I much prefer Blue/Black, or FDE, or ODG, etc.

Anyway, I came across a very nice looking 3914 Lady Smith on Gunbroker this past week. I have ALWAYS wanted a blued Gen 3 Single Stack, but never made it happen. I keep watching the 3914 and the price continued to remain reasonable on the auction. It had a BUY NOW price of $550. With two days left on the auction, I emailed the owner and asked if he would take $500 for it delivered if I hit the Buy Now and he said, "No thanks". So I just kept an eye on it.

With an hour left, it was at $405. I put in a bid for $426.03 with 16 minutes remaining and I WON it at that price! The seller was nice enough to let me send him a FedEx shipping label from my account (I get a 70% discount with FedEx because of all the International shipping I do with them in my business). My FFL dealer is my buddy and I don't pay for transfers. So my final cost is $426.03.

I now S&W didn't make a ton 3914's to begin with. No doubt much less of the Lady Smith versions. So I suspect these are kind of rare. I know I hardly ever see them come up for sale. I have no idea what they go for. How'd I do?

Why is it that I seem to LOVE the Lady Smith versions? I have a Model 65 Lady Smith revolver, which in my opinion, is on of the best combat revolvers ever made. I also have a 3" model 60 Lady Smith with the factory original Combat grips that is one of my favorite J Frames.

I think I may wind up keeping the 3914 LS because it is Blue. I never really bonded with the stainless ones. I don't mind stainless revolvers, but never cared for stainless semi-autos.

Here are the pictures from the auction. I should have it in a week or so. I will update this post once I have some range time with it.

I passed up an NL 3914 the same day I found my LNIB 3913NL, because I didn't have the $350 they wanted. (I don't buy guns with credit cards, my rule). I scrambled some cash together and went back a week later, and it was gone. Haven't seen one since, and that was about 4 years ago.

If I see another one, I may have to break my rule. That's a purty gun. Congratulations!

You got lucky! That’s a sweet buy with purse. I was going to bid u up on that, but decided I’m holding out for a TSW.

Edit: I wonder if the fact it was listed as Lay Smith helped it go unnoticed. Oh and I won the drawbar listed for $30 lol

Beautiful gun, I saw that one on GB also, but no budget for one right now... question, do the NL versions still say LADYSMITH on the slide?
Does it stand for no lady?... they are nice looking that’s for sure.

NL do not have "Lady Smith" on the slide..... well at least not the 3913NLs.

"NL" has been reported to have 2 different meanings...... "Non-LadySmith" and "New Line". Don't remember/seen either confirmed by S&W

Put some nice Hogue checkered wood grips on that baby....... yes they are a bit thicker ( which I like) but have no practical impact on concealed carry...... no one has noticed my 3913NL with Hogue's in a Sparks Summer Special since 1991/92.

I've also read (here), that NL stands for "No Logo".

Maybe it actually stands for "Nice Lines." Which it has. :D

Funny, I had that Sig on my Watchlist too!

I also wondered if the "Lay Smith" made a difference, but I am quite certain that people who are looking for a "3914 Lady Smith", also simply search "3914". It's not like you get 2000 results with "3914". That's how I found it, just typed in "3914". Many times I have searched just that, and nothing but spare mags come up!

The last "3913 Lady Smith" I bought 4 years ago, was actually a 3913 NL (doesn't say Lady Smith on the slide). It was mint like new. I got for $325. The reason I got it so cheap...it was simply listed as a "S&W 3919" on Gunbroker! We all know there is no such thing as a 3919. It was a typo. I only came across it because I was looking at the seller's one other listing, and noticed it at the bottom of the page where it lists a seller's other auctions. About a 1.5 years ago I sold it for twice that. I almost kept it, but I just don't love stainless semi-autos. A two-tone that is half nickel or chrome is another story. That I like, but all stainless, nah!

I will probably keep the 3914 LS since it is blue/black.I need to have at least one Gen 3 S&W auto in my collection. I would be remiss if I didn't. Especially a nice and slim single stack 9mm Gen 3.

I really wish the DAO single stack 9mm models had a better trigger and didn't have the funky long section at the rear slide. As much as I don't like the frame-mounted safety of the DA/SA Gen 3s, I dislike the trigger and long rear of the DAOs more. That's why I got rid of my 3953. If S&W made a DAO with a better trigger, and normal looking slide I would have every model they made.

The Lady Smith with its Frame-Mounted Safety on one side only is a compromise for me. The frame-mounted safety is the only thing I don't love about the Gen 3s DA/SAs. But I am just going to suck it up and live with it!

The NL versions are called NL because the have No Lady Smith marking on them. The have the same upswept dust cover, but don't say Lady Smith. That's the ONLY difference.

That's not a bad idea! Do you have a picture you can post with the grips on?

I actually googled it. Yep checked wood grips are a definite! I will be placing my order.

Cool find, great price, good job! I know you don't really find the shield's striker trigger to be nicer than 3rd gen SA trigger. Never looked at DA/SA as complicating things...but I'm an old school fan of the action, and see it's differences as advantages. That said, no knocking your shield at all! Now...let's see if you can keep from selling your new 3914LS. I have 3913LS and NL, my favorite carry guns of all time. Enjoy yours! It would be cool to know exactly how many "black lady smiths" were made. I don't think too many.

OP HERE:

In all honesty, my Shield has had A LOT of work done to it. After Installed the Apex M&P competition trigger kit, Doug at Atei did a trigger job on it when he was milling my slide. With the kit it was 3.5 lb trigger pull. Now it is below 3lb. The trigger is INSANE.

But I do agree the S&W DA/SA Gen 3 trigger are some of the best DA/SA triggers I have ever encountered. The only other DA/SA triggers that come close are the newer CZ Omega triggers found on their newer DA/SA guns like the P-07.

Here is my SHIELD. I actually have a stock one as well.

I googled pics and I think the wood grips look amazing on the silver guns (3913 etc). But I did not like how the wood grips looked on the blued guns (3914 etc). Which surprised me. I think I am going to leave them as they are.

Anyone else agree? This isn't a good look right? Or is it just me?
