Good starting byllseye pistol? Yes. $400? I don't know what they go for in the current market upheaval. Mine was $250, new, in the 1990s. The following years of $179 new 22A pistols held down the used price of 22S pistols. For me and most target shooters the heavier 22S is the better gun but that might not be the case if you add weight in the form of optic sights. In S&W's product line they were bracketed by the .22 M&P which was worthless junk on a bullseye range and the $1000 Model 41 which was a better gun. I have no experience with the S&W Victory. $400 used to buy a variety of Ruger Mark whatever all steel pistols that many target shooters preferred. My Rugers are good pistols but without upgrading their triggers they are not better pistols. Their drawback is that they require more frequent cleaning because pistols like the Model 41 and 22S do not trap foulding in the receiver as bad. It can only escape out of the Ruger through the small ejection port. You can't go too far wrong buying a 22S. Mine is a good pistol.

Price is on the high end to me, nut the market is strange lately, but the 22S is an excellent target pistol. It is more robust and less picky on ammo than the newer Victory. Inferior at range to the more expensive Model 41, the Model S is as good for plinking and casual competition. I bought this one new at Academy Sporting Goods 20 years ago and have shot the hell out of it since.
