Illinois State Police S&W

Model 5904, I've looked in the big book etc. This is the first time I've ever even seen a picture of one.

It's possibly a 75 anniversary (1997) edition. Probably for purchase by ISP officers, not an issue pistol. I was retired by 1997, so I'm just guessing. Maybe ISP Capt. will weigh in.

That's the 75th Anniversary commemorative gun. Personal purchase in 1997. It's a 5904. I forget what they cost new.
We're doing our 100th Anniversary commemorative gun now. The issued gun is a Glock 22 but Glock said they weren't currently making 22s so the 100 yr is a Glock 17. Glock isn't doing the engraving, that's being done by a contractor. They're not as nice looking as the 5904.

I think the 75th anniversary 5904 were sold for $700 and I think Ray O Herron handled all the initial transfers. You could get Ray O Herron to ship your pistol to any FFL but it cost extra IIRC.

When ISP transitioned to Glock 22/23 I thought the asking price for issued 5904/6904 was too high and I didn’t buy my 5904 back. The 5904/6904 had no ISP markings other than an inventory number on the right side of the dust cover.

I later bought a 5904 just like my issued pistol except for no night sights.

Picture of my S&W 5904.

This a picture of my 5904 in a Don Hume duty holster issued for the 5904 along with an issued Jay Pee cuff case.

This was my issued 5904.
I was issued both this 5904 and a 6904. When we went to Glocks we could buy our issued gun but only one. The 5904 had less rounds thru it and at the time not a scratch or mark. I'd carried and shot the 6904 a lot more. Since we could only buy one I bought my 5904. I probably could have also bought my 6904 but it was showing a lot of wear.
I still use my 5904 for my LEOSA qualification. With FMJ standard pressure rds it's an easy shooter and will group better than I can hold them these days.
I later bought a 6904.
I've bought back all my issued guns except my 439, 469 and Glock 23. Never cared for the 439 or 469 at the time. Now I wished I'd bought them just to have all my issued handguns.
Two I wish I could have bought was my 870 and the Remington 700 ADL that I was issued as a sniper. That 870 was issued to me out of the Academy. I put a Choate folding stock on it and carried it clipped to the door post on the driver's side. It was quick and easy to grab. On SWAT I carried it on every call out I can think of. It looked pretty rough when I retired. A lot of blue wear, scratches and dings.
The 700 was in .30-06. Our range guys had slicked the trigger and bedded the action. Best group I ever shot with it was .75 at 175 yds with W-W 125 gr SP. It was sweet. When I got off SWAT had to turn it in. The ISP later swapped all the 700s and Win 70 sniper rifles for 40X. Somebody today has them a very nice .30-06.
