Will a CS40 guide rod work in a CS9? If it's longer, can it be cut shorter to work? Or can I buy just the plunger and replace that? Thank you in advance

If you are trying to replace a chewed up polymer plunger on the CS9 guide rod, you can but you may have to use a donor rod since the plungers are not available separately. I replaced mine with a metal plunger from a 4516 rod.

Excellent thats sounds like a great idea because I want a metal plunger. Is it difficult to get the plunger out of the rod, and put it into the other one? How is that done?

Have you checked with the "mother ship" about sending you a new one? They send them for free many times.

Somebody need a plunger?

Do you know which models use a .237" guide rod, preferably stainless steel?

The 3-1/2" barrel 4013TSW/4056TSW & 4516-2 use a .237" guide rod, which would need to be shortened.

The flange is .400" diameter as well.

S&W PN#: 108620000

MidwayUSA used to sell them but it no longer does. One of the ones I got from them had the stainless steel body but had a polymer plunger while another one was all stainless steel. Weird.

Thanks for the info. Yesterday I got a stainless steel guide rod, its the larger one, IIRC its a 4566 guide rod. The stainless steel plunger is the same size as the chewed up plastic one in my CS9, so I just used the plunger out of that larger rod and put into my CS9 guide rod.

I don't know if he'll still do it but BMCM (here on the forum) modified a large diameter (.290") guide rod to the smaller diameter (.237"), & shorter length, that I needed some years ago but couldn't find.

If you still want an all stainless steel assembly send him a PM & ask. He does gunsmithing & has the machinery to do it easily.

I can make a guiderod assembly or any portion thereof in any length or diameter you desire. .236 Diameter for nested spring sets and CSx guns, .250 diameter for flatwire setups and .290 diameter for single coil spring guns ie. everything else.

PM or email if you need something cooked up.

Cheers

I was just wondering what other models have a stainless guide rod with the same diameter as my CS9 guide rod, so I could cut it off shorter.

If your guiderod is made of metal, it's already stainless, just blackened. Unlike highly corrosion resistant steels like 316L These gun parts are made of a 400 series stainless alloy ie. 410 or 416 steel so still can rust if not cared for. Same material the barrels, slides & stainless steel frames are made of. While it's marketed as stainless it more accurately should be called "somewhat mildly corrosion resistant steel". If you just need a plunger you can buy any one piece guiderod assembly applicable to any model and salvage the plunger from it or I can machine one from bar stock.

Any CSx model will have the plastic plunger.
For a steel plunger you'll want something like this 4566/1066 assembly...

There may be others but I thought I already answered that question for you?
