I got this very nice condition 5946 from fellow forum member ACEd. It is a verified NYPD pistol, from the 75th Precinct.

Shot 25rds total, 5 - 5rd strings. Freedom Munitions 124gr FMJ. 25 feet indoors. No FTF/FTE issues at all.

It's a very accurate pistol. I'm a lefty with a dominant right eye. So my shooting tends to pull to the right. Since this pistol has Novak rear sights, I'll have to adjust them accordingly.

I also shot its alloy framed .40 caliber cousin, the 4043. 20 shots, 4 - 5rd strings. 165gr PMC FMJ. 25ft indoors. No FTF/FTE issues. Note the grouping to the right with this pistol as well.

I had a 5946 and a 4046 before these, and I ended up selling both. I didn't like the triggers on either. The ones shown here both have triggers that remind me of shooting a 686 double action.

The 2 other DAO pistols I sold had straight grips. The 2 I have now and shown in the pics have the rounded grips.

I think that it makes a difference. Has anyone else noticed a difference in shooting DAO 3rd Generation pistols with a straight vs. a rounded grips?

Either way, I'm happy with both.

Of all the service pistols the NYPD offered the S&W 5946 with the straight back grip was the best fit for shooters with smaller hands as that configuration had the shortest distance between tang to trigger.

The curved back was obviously the best option for larger hands for those that selected the 5946, both grips were offered as options during gun selection.

Having average sized hands I preferred the straight back grip and yes there is a definite difference in feel between the two as you are asking.

Ahhhh the good old 75 Precinct 1000 Sutter Ave, the garden spot of Brooklyn North!

Thank you for the info, I appreciate it!

When I joined the force I lived in Brooklyn North(Greenpoint)around the corner from the 94Pct but never worked in a Brooklyn Pct.
I did a few stake outs in Brooklyn but that was about it.
Working Brooklyn was probably better than the South Bronx.
With the Dominicans on one side of the street and the Puerto Ricans on the other a reloader would have a field day picking up the empties every morning.

BTW,if memory serves me?I recall there were some members given a model 59 to carry way before the 5946 was adopted.

Stakeout, The 59 was never issued or tested as a service weapon, more than likely you are recalling some of the non standard weapons that were authorized for certain assignments when revolvers were the standard issue for UMOS or possibly during the 9mm pilot program when the Ruger P89 DAO 9mm was issued to Patrol for testing and feedback.

But then again, going as far back as your time OTJ runs it wouldn’t surprise me at all if some “field authorization” occurred!

Grip Trivia - stumbled across an odd piece of Grip Trivia which surprised me:

At least on S&W Parts List the 5904/5906/5944/5946 as well as the 4006/4046 - the Standard Grip is the Straight Grip with the Curved Grip listed as Optional listed at least on the Parts List dated 2012.

But for the 5906TSW and 5946TSW, Only the Curved Grip is listed.

And for the 4006TSW and 4046TSW, Only the Straight Grip is listed.

Personally I would have bet all the TSW variants would have the Straight Standard and Curved Optional and the non-TSW the other way around.

Go Figure.

During gun selection for NYPD recruits the exact firearm selection is recorded including the grip type for the 5946 when it was authorized. When the weapon was assigned to the recruit it had the grip they selected on it already installed.

We had bins full of straight or curved back grips in the armory so it was never an issue.

First, great shooting quikdraw, as I know you shoot offhand all the time at 25 feet. I know there are charts that show what pulling right or down or both mean. But with your dominant eye, dominant hand combo, those charts probably aren't worth the paper they are printed on. With your consistency, the adjustable sights will be your friend. I really enjoy the old NYPD officers recalling their days in various precincts. A fun thread all the way around. Thanks.
