I researched this problem here before posting and found a suggestion to replace mag springs. This gun shipped in 74 figured it was time anyway. Ordered and installed new springs. Function tested today with same results.

I have another 52-2 that functions fine. I field stripped both and compared parts. Most noticeable item was the recoil springs. They both have 33 coils but the problem child is roughly 1/8 inch longer. Would that matter?

Also I had a couple of key hole shots. Whats up with that?

Pics attached. (don't know why they are on their sides, grrrr)

Thanks for any suggestions you may have.

Please post pictures of jam before you clear it.
Is it every shot ? First or last shot out of magazine.
Have you had extractor out of your pistol.

Dave, extractor has not been out. Out of 23 shots all but 2 failed to eject today. No pic of the jams. Sometimes the case is partially ejected other times it is still in the chamber.

What is your load. If is less than 3 Gr. Of bullseye
It may not have enough slide travel to throw empty clear
Of the gun.
Put shorter spring from your other gun in it and see if problem
Goes away.
Buy different spring or increase powder charge. 1/10 gr. At a time.
If it will run with other spring .
I should of said do not exceed max load
In book.

HOLD UP on that 3.0 grains Bullseye a second…

Scores of shooters over decades run 2.7 or 2.8 grains of Bullseye under a 148gr swaged HBWC. Running over 3.0 grains of Bullseye with that bullet and in to 3.5 grains sets you up for catastrophic failure. You can blow the core out of the bullet leaving a full diameter lead skirt in the bore. A nasty obstruction where the next rings the barreo, effectively destroying that barrel.

If swapping the recoil spring brings no joy, I would pull the extractor and do a deep clean on the crevices. I might pull both extractors and visually compare the extractor hooks. I would replace the extractor spring on the malfunctioning pistol.

Extractor pin removal is from top down through the access hole, taking care to NOT hog out that access hole in the top of the slide.

Give the chamber a good scrubbing with fine steel wool wrapped around a 357 brass brush, saturated with Kroil.

Looks like thin paper that's tearing not sideways bullets. Use thicker paper.

Thanks for the suggestions. Here's what I'm shooting. Next trip to the range I'll swap recoil springs. But will do a closer inspection of the extractor.

I had the same problem . I had FTE and the slide wouldn't go all the way forward , I would have to give it a little push . I read about the mag springs and decided to try it , it was a cheap fix . If you think about it , it makes sense . I ordered 6 mag springs , just to have them . Lucky I did , one of my range buddies ran into the same problem . He didn't believe me at first , but after he changed the springs he became a believer . Told him it's amazing what you can learn on the S&W forum .

I saw your previous post regarding the springs and ordered them. Big difference in what I had vs what I received from Numrich. I only ordered 4 springs but will order 5 more for my other mags.

Did you did-assemble the mags and give them a good clean? Its amazing
how much exhaust from the chamber finds it way down into the mag body.
Does it make a difference? I dont know, but one less dirty part in the functioning picture.

Thanks Mike. I actually cleaned them twice. Completely disassembled and cleaned a few weeks ago when I picked this 52-2 up at the SWCA meeting and again when I put the new springs in a couple of days ago.
