Mr. OP, some people call them repros, I choose the term aftermarket.
Have not found one yet that measures up to an original factory mag.
If you find some that work at the range, you are way a head of me.

These magazines look identical to the model 39 magazines sold by Numrich Arms. Those mags had a couple reviews on the forum and were positive.

Numrich Arms shows GPC as the manufacturer of the model 39 magazine and are $44. At the price at SARCO I might be a beta tester, lol.

I considered doing it myself but I have plenty of factory 39 magazines - just thinking of those less fortunate.

Well I’ll contribute a public service to the forum as I just ordered two of the S&W model 39 magazines from SARCO. I’ll post a review with pictures when I get them. I also ordered a couple of 1911 45 ACP mags that have been getting good reviews.

This was my Birthday present to me.

I have three factory S&W 39 mags for my 39-2 and one factory 39 mag for my 439. I also have one nine round 3904 stainless steel mag and one ProMag. We’ll see if these mags from SARCO match the pictures.

Your wiser than I, never thought of that being Numrich but they are gunparts.com. I figure Numrich has subcontracted out the magazines for production by another manufacturer. My curiosity was peeked and I’ve wasted $40 before so I felt like being a beta tester.

I have two of the Gun parts mags and they work perfectly in my 39-2

I’m hoping these SARCO mags are by the same manufacturer as Numrich Arms with the metal follower and floor plate. So far my ProMag magazine has functioned with my reloads the few times I used it. The floor plate is longer on the ProMag where I wish it matched the S&W mag floor plate.

What specifically are the characteristics of a real original 439 mag? steel baseplate, and black plastic follower? I have a 439.

In general I've not had much luck with repro or after market magazines. I have also not had good luck with genuine S&W Model 41 magazines that were newly manufactured in the last few years when used in my 1979 vintage M41.

That said, I decided quite a while ago to only buy magazines that were originally made for a certain gun and in the case of my M41, I bought the old style metal follower type used and they all work perfectly - as they should. Even S&W advised me to use only vintage mag's in a vintage M41 as they know their newly made ones are problematic in older M41's.

There are a few exceptions, those are my Colt 1911's which will work with any old magazines I have acquired over the years. I've got a slew of different USGI Mags (some look like they should be tossed) from a bunch of manufacturers left over from WWll. They all work just fine!

What I would say is that for Range shooting aftermarket magazines might work fine, but for self defense I'd stick with the originals. In my case I have been fortunate enough to get rid of all repros and after market magazines and now own only originals. I've actually acquired quite a few of the "two tone" cyanide treated Colt magazines in .25, .32 .380 and .45 acp.

If you have a problematic magazine I'd not use it even for target shooting. Being interrupted with feeding issues will not help anyones scores.

Got a few ProMags for my M39 a couple of years ago. Not finished as nicely as the OE's, but function just as well.

I bought one. Excellent quality. Excellent finish. Virtually indistiguishable from factory save for the lack of base plate markings. The base plate catch seems to be a tad rough edged compared to my factory mags.
Flawless function so far. I did have to install the spring properly as it would not take 8 rounds. I found the spring installed backwards.
What I see, is when word gets round, these will be sold as factory, for high money, GP has surplus S&W marked baseplates for cheap.
Beware.
Overall at $20 plus S&H.... Excellent!

Mec Gar is top notch. Never had a problem with any product. Pro mag IMO opinion is junk .

I will keep hunting the S&W factory mags. Half the fun is in the hunt - of course if I say that I already have a bunch.
