Saw a Model 539 locally, two magazines, no box. Gun is in excellent condition, owner says unfired. Owner asking $850. Good price?

Nickel plated or blued finish? If nickel plated, that would be a fantastic price, if blued, it's a reasonable price these days. The Model 539 was not a bit sales hit. I think the 439 was the most popular of the single stack second gen Smiths, followed by the all-stainless 639.

Unfortunate that it is unfired but has no box. They're not super common and would be interesting to check out.

Yes, but it used to be very common to buy a new handgun and toss out the cardboard box as it offered no protection from the elements nor could it be locked for security.

We had a used 539 go locally for $700, and I would have bought it if it had fixed sights. It is an uncommon find. And a steel framed 39 series is cool regardless.

Like the numbers, I rank a 539 “better than” a 439, but not quite so well as a 639. ;) In this day and age finding a near-perfect 539 with 2 mags (even without box and dox) at $800 sounds pretty good. Of course I’d have to dicker over the price as a matter of habit, but if I needed a 9mm, that deal would be very tempting.

i can't speak for the price but it is a cool gun. Not so good DA trigger but very good in SA. Heavy steel makes it easy to shoot even as a 9mm. No box here either...

I prefer the blue over the nickel but others will not. I have nickel and blue in 39-2's. While the nickel gives it the bling factor the blue is still my preference.

It’s blued. Thanks for the input. I may take another look this weekend and see if I can talk him down a bit. If not, well, I can live without it.

The 539 is not common so a collector might be willing to pay the premium to check it off his list,
In reality they are heavy guns,

Owner has lowered price to $750. Good price? I really don’t need another 9mm, but it’s tempting.

$750 without the box is on the high side but if it's like new, probably worth it. I have never seen anything but the winged rear sight and round trigger guard on a 539. The 439 and 639 both have the dovetail sights. Only square trigger guards I have seen are on the 639's.

As a cop I had a variety of 1st, 2nd and 3rd generation autoloaders. I am old and nostalgic but I never liked them. I sold all of mine off over the years.

I prefer revolvers and as a reloader I do not have to bend over to pick up the brass.

539's are not common, I'd say in today's market, if it has a flawless finish, then $750 is not out of line.

Mr. JohnHL, they did make a goodly number of them, est. 347,551.
Not all of them were the generic 39-2. The 2nd gen guns are all the same with the exception of rear sights and trigger guard shape. There were 927
steel mod-39s made. How many 539s in blue and nickel?

The NRA Museum states that approximately 10,000 539’s were made. I would really have to “want” one to pay over 500 - 600 for one
