are 639 mags compatible with a 539?

Thanks for all the replies. The mags between the guns are normally compatible (my question answered), but something is slightly off with my 539, since all three 639 mags have the same resistance to smoothly insert into my 539.

I don't have the instrument to make a fine measurement. I will just use the one mag that came with the 539 and not mess with getting my 639 mags to fit, since I don't need them to. I prefer to keep the 539 unmodified.

I have a model 411, the 40 cal. with 11 round magazines.
The mags are very, very tight in fitting the eleventh round. With mag full and slide closed on a chambered round, the mag is very hard to insert. I have no problem with this because of how I was trained giving the bottom of the mag a strong whack so it seats every time. Similarly, the mag release requires a very strong deliberate push. No danger of dropping one unintended. This is a feature not a bug. No issue with the 10 round mags.

When reloading from slide lock however it is easy, easy. I wondered perhaps if something similar may be happening with you.

Kind Regards!

I removed the grips from the 539 to see how the mags insert.

At this point is where much more force is required with the 639 mags.

There doesn't seem to be any obstructions or the slot being too narrow, which is good.

A few thoughts, apologies if they've been covered ,
Have you tried,
1) Insert magazine with magazine release physically depressed ?
If they insert it's likely a burr on your mag release.
2) remove slide, insert mag to make sure magazine safety bar is operational.
3) swap mag release from 639 to 539,
If so does problem follow mag release?
To settle my own sudden doubts I pulled three 39-2's, a pre 39 from 1956, 39 no dash from 1966, 549 ( thin ejector ) and an early 639.
All mags interchange easily in all guns including a 3953 although they stick out the bottom further on the 3953.

I just looked at your pics with grips removed,
Looks like it's the mag release engaging the top of the magazine, my bet is it has a burr or something and if you swap mag release buttons the problem follows the mag release to the 639.
