I have no scale myself and I'm looking for the official weight of the Model 41 with a 5.5 barrel. The SW product page lists the weight as 69.1 oz. This is not even close. Wikipedia lists it as 41oz. I've seen it listed anywhere from 41 to 45 oz. Anyone have the real weight?

My mid 90s M41 with a 5.5 inch barrel weighs 44.9 ounces including the 1.75 ounce magazine according to my scale.

S&W seems to flip a coin about whether to include the weight of a magazine or not when they weigh guns. I don't know how consistent the design has been over the decades they have been in production. There might have been some changes that would cause the weight to vary a few ounces depending on when it was made.

While I have not officially weighed mine, I find the original factory 5.5" bbl. a bit too heavy for my liking. About 6 or 7 years ago I found a brand new 5" factory packed field/sport bbl. It saves about 6 ounces and makes the pistol much more of a pleasure to shoot. Even since I put the Field bbl. on it, the original bull barrel has been sleeping in my safe. :)

More importantly knowing the exact weight is how it feels when you shoot it. Since the S/F bbl. was put on my M41 I've never shot it better! :)

I understand the powers that be have always insisted on making high end 22 target pistols heavy and some even have weights that are able to be added to the barrel. While indeed some like that, I suppose I am the exception. Next Friday when I take it to the Range, I'll weigh mine with the F/S bbl. on it.

I'm in agreement, chief38. I dislike the 5 1/2" heavy barrel. It doesn't feel quite right in my hand. Some would argue I'm not quite right in my head, for that matter. The 5" field barrel is great, but mine's not all that accurate. Still it's fun to shoot. My favorite is the 7 3/8" barrel. I'll have to check, but I think it's close to the weight of the 5 1/2" heavy barrel. It feels much better though, probably because the center of mass is closer to my hand. Now I need to go weigh everything . . . .

I believe overall length and weight will vary over the years of production, But if you must know the actual weight of our barrel I would suggest taking it to the pst officeand weighing it on their scales. I'm sure the Post Office scales are regularly calibrated so they should be fairly accurate.
Or wrap your barrel in Saran Wrap & take it to the deli section of your local supermarket and ask for permission to weigh something that's a Non Food item. I would just suggest doing that out of the presence of customers, they might not appreciate that wrapped or not.
But more important is how the barrel weight feels in hand during shooting and how it balances for you when you shoot.

My 41 with a 5” barrel weighs 36.3, with a 5 1/2” barrel 42.9 and with a Clark 5 1/2” STC and FF3 red dot 39.4 All without mags.

Well, I guess you saved me the trouble of weighing mine - lol :D I do remember the 5" F&S bbl was about 6 ounces lighter than the 5.5" bull bbl.

My dad just gave me a mint Model 41 from 1972 with the original box and paperwork. It is the long (7 3/8?) barrel model and has the compensator, but it also has some additional/alternate weights and end piece if I want to remove the compensator.

And he also gave me a 5.5 inch barrel for it that he bought a long time ago. My dad is the original owner. I was not expecting this huge blessing. It was a surprise early birthday present. I shot it at his range yesterday and may go to my range tomorrow. I shot it using both barrel lengths. I think he bought the short barrel for it at a gun show a million years ago. This is my first vintage Smith & Wesson. I am very grateful and excited to own it.

I would weigh everything for you, but I don't have anything that weighs in ounces. My wife may have something like that. I will need to check with her. If not, I will need to pick up something because I am curious now too.

I am heading to the Range this morning and since I am taking my M41 I did remember to weight it. Here is what I got on my electronic kitchen scale.

Official weight with the 5" Sport and Field barrel installed including the empty mag = 35.9 oz.

Official weight (same barrel) without the mag in the gun = 34.2 oz.

I don't know if you can see the readout in the pic's. but it is what is stated above.

S&W 41 with 5 inch field barrel

How does this configuration shoot at say 25 yards benched?

My 5 inch field barrel has the red ramp front sight. I’ve often cussed myself for not getting the patridge, but oh well.

From sitting braced, I can quite often keep 5 shots under 1.75 inches at 25.
Ten shots at 25 usually go around 2 inches if I call all good shots.,

It kind of defeats the purpose, but it’d be interesting what a 5 inch field barrel would do with a red dot or a scope.

In my humble opinion, a M41 with a field barrel is the finest 22 handgun for the outdoorsman ever made.
