Hello folks. New here and have a question about the differences between the 40 S&W caliber 4006 and 4046 model pistols.
I have a model 4006 which is a great shooter and I'm looking at a barrel for a 4046 on Ebay as a spare.
I know that the 4046 is a single action only while my 4006 is single-double action but otherwise they're pretty much the same pistol right?
So my question is will the 4046 barrel fit in my 4006?
Much Mahalo. D
PS: My other S&Ws are a 45acp model 4566, a 9mm model 59, a 22lr field model 422, and a .357 mag model 586-8 revolver.

The 4006 Traditional Double Action (TDA) and the 4046 Double Action Only (DAO) used the same barrel. However, there were different revisions to the barrel. The pistol parts list shows the following barrels for both models:

Part Number - Revision - Description
236040000 - R3 - Barrel (OBS)
276180000 - X - Barrel
391080000 - X - Barrel
896330000 - X - Barrel (OBS)

I'm not sure what the differences are between the listed barrels, also the 4006TSW and 4046TSW used a different barrel part number (266940000).

Potentially yes or no - depending on barrel vintage. In general 4006 and 4046 barrels of a common vintage should interchange. But I believe there are potential differences in 4006/4046 barrels over time like the other 3rd gen pistols. The most significant of these would be the width of the barrel hood and the corresponding width of the cutout at the back of the ejection slot on the slide. Early pistols would have had the original 3rd generation narrow hood while later pistols would have had the wider hood / slot configuration. And as noted, the TSW barrels are different from either vintage of the non-TSW barrels.

Thanks for the replies folks. My 4006 barrel has the narrow hood while from the addition pics the seller at Ebay sent me it appears that the 4046 that they have for sale has the wide hood.
Guess I'll keep looking.

You could have that wide hood fitted to your slide. I bought a wide hood 4506 barrel and had a shop fit it to my narrow hood slide. Works perfectly.

Watch Midway and other popular SW 3rd gen parts sources - Occasionally they list new barrels - but again watch hood width.
Also watch eBay and Gunbroker for "4006 Parts Kits" - I frequently see 3rd Gen kits with matching slide/barrel - everything but serialized frame taken off a pistol that was destroyed (serialized frame destroyed).
But be aware. used barrels may be better or worse than the one you have and unless you are going to put thousands of rounds thru it you probably would never need a new barrel.

May I ask why?
How many rounds to significantly degrade a 4006 barrel?[/QUOTE

Since S&W hasn't made any of these pistols in quite a while I try to pick up spare parts for them when I can.
Not that I expect to wear any of them out but they're going to be passed down in my family and sometime in the future a spare barrel or other part might come in handy.
Meanwhile I've updated the sights on the 4006 and 4566 with Trijicon Bright & Tough night sights which are much easier for my old eyes to pick up than the Novak sights and put standard strength Wolff springs in all of them.

Everygunpart.com is another good place to find used firearm parts.
