Would love to see a semi-auto 12 gauge M&P Tactical shotgun. Ghost rings, light accessory rail, 7+ rd capacity, etc. included.

That sounds like a dandy idea, I have been looking for the right Auto to round out my selection of shotguns.

It might even be cheaper to buy and Availiable.
Something the highly advertised Mossberg 930 SPX
isn't.

Bump again!
There are other options available out there already, but S&W is a name I know and trust. I'll wait to get a M&P12. Until then, I'll go without

That's the only hole I can think of in the M&P lineup. If S&W built an M&P autoloading shotgun that ran as good as my M&P-15, I would buy one.
It is pretty obvious that S&W wants to get back on top again in the LE market and they're on the fast track to achieving that goal IMO.

I would like to see the name on a shotgun, too, but I don't think it's likely for a couple of reasons. First, seems like S&W's attempt at shotguns a few years ago (remember the 916?) didn't go too well. Can't recall if they were domestic or not. I seem to recall that Smith stamped their names on some better ones put out after that, IIRC, but they were not utility grade. Second, the trend is and will likely remain the AR platform for LE which, obviously, they are on board with) for a lot of good (and some not as good) reasons. Third, I think the police shotgun market is pretty well taken care of with the 870 and Benelli.
But I'm not in marketing...

Of course, S&W had the right SGN a while back - the 3000. A much improved version of the famed 870. Smooth, well-finished, reliable, and incorporating real improvements in the areas that needed it.
I had a phone conversation with the then-president of S&W back in 1988 or 1989, where he confessed they screwed up dropping the 3000, and then letting Mossberg purchase the rights to it. Mossberg showed it in one catalog, but never sold it in this country.

OldLawman,
When Mossberg DID list it, what did they identify it as?
Where did Mossberg end up selling it, and what was it designated as for overseas sale? If you know?
THANKS!

In 30+ years of LE, I've never seen an autoloading shotgun in a patrol car. I've seen Remington 870s, S&W 3000s, and the occasional Mossberg 500 & 590, but they're all pumps. I don't think the shotgun will be replaced by the AR-15 anytime soon... most cars carry both in my neck of the woods.
I would buy a new autoloader for use at work if S&W "M&Ped" it. S&W's M&P line of weaponry is very well-made and reliable. They have been quick to correct any problems that have occurred in their newer designs. I bought an M&P-15 for work and I have had ZERO issues with it. I have a co-worker that bought an M&P-45 and it is a nice, reliable pistol.
From what I've seen, the weapons in the M&P line are a pretty good value.

Bump again!
Does anyone from S&W read these forums? What's the best way to show interest in this? I wrote to S&W customer service but I don't think that's going to generate any real interest in developing this. Ideas?

That would be awesome. Having never owned a S&W {mostly due to cost} I'm catching up. I have an M&P40, M&P15 and will soon own a M&P wheelgun. Hell I think I'll name my next dog M&P

That is a very good question. I doubt that any of the real decision makers are poring over this forum to see what we are thinking, but I'd like to be proven wrong!

I'll take one too, It should look good with my 916's 3000's and 1000's. I have a 916 police that I use for home defense purposes and as a deer gun here in Ohio,(shoots just as good as my rifled slug gun out to 90yds. or so) May not be as solid as an 870 or 3000 but still not a bad gun. JMO

So after reading this thread so far and thinking about an M&P shotty, I am def going to lose some sleep, a lot of sleep.
S&W have to make one sooner or later right? I mean it only makes sense.

Bump!
So how do we make this happen? Or at least, how can we make our interest known? Anyone here know someone at S&W who might listen to an idea like this? How about a petition to show interest?
It sounds like a great idea to me.

Well I wrote to Smith & Wesson and told them I thought a tactical M&P shotgun would be a great idea. If you want one, there's probably one way to do it, and that's letting them know. So write to them already!

The M&P shotgun is by far the best idea in this section. In case someone from S&W does read this stuff, lets get specific. Exactly what improvements would you guys with law enforcement experience like to see? Lets say, compared to an 870, what would you change? I can guess you would like a smoother, slicker action and higher capacity, as well as integrated rails. What else? Is weight a concern or is ruggedness / durability more important? I mean, would they build the receiver out of some exotic lighter metal or just stick with steel? Shorter, heavier barrel, or is lighter more important? I'm sure they would turn out something that looked the part, real badass. I really think we may be on to something here.

letter i wrote to S&W, more along the lines of a decent pump shotgun, they have autos, and autos suck anyway. here it goes:
I am a big fan of S&W and own many of your products. I can't help to notice that the company is missing out on a big product. The simple defensive 12 gauge pump. S&W needs to introduce a shotgun that competes with the rem 870 and Mossberg 500/590. I mean think about all the potential contracts for law enforcement, possible even military that could be gotten. Let alone from civilian sales. For the price it takes to make a S&W 500, you could make a M&P 12 for less then half of that and sell 5 times as many.
-There would be standard models with a good hard finish, 18''-20'' barrel, maybe a high-vis front site. shell capacity 6-8. fixed improved cylinder choke
-same setup as above but with 4 round capacity, build in weaver rail, 22-24 inch barrel with interchangeable choke tubes. hunting model. could come with an 18" barrel for a combo hunting/defense shotgun setup
-The tactical model could have an m4 6 position collapsible stock, side shell carrier, and ghost ring sites. full length mag tube. maybe a breaching muzzle adapter at the end.
Think about it, with the S&W brand, and the M&P logo, these things are bound to sell like hotcakes.
The shotguns currently available by S&W are way to niche. I mean fancy over/unders and auto loading shotguns are only desired by certain people.
Everyone needs a good all around multi purpose pump shotgun. Maybe even offer longer barrels to sell separately for hunting.
The M&P line has had a great resurgence with the polymer pistols, carry revolvers, AR carbines, and now it needs to round it out with a combat shotgun, the mighty M&P 12.
I know people like me that already have a winchester 1300, Remington 870, or Mossberg would buy one regardless.
Just like people are switching from glocks to M&Ps, or bushmaster, rra, dpms instead get an m&p15.
People buy one m&p product, like it so much and then pretty soon all of there firearm niches are filled by a s&w product.
I really hope someone who cares about their company and about their loyal fans reads this, or at least passes it on to someone in marketing or R&D.
I can't believe this hasn't been done yet. It can still be done its not too late, and pump shotguns are as simple as they come, they could be off the drawing board and in production by the end of the year.
-Thanks

Smith & Wesson should get together with Norinco Of China and develop the combat shot Gun that is needed in every squad car and home in the U.S.A !

Let's do a petition. We'll develop a realistic list of features and see if people will sign it. Anyone in?

They would be hard pressed to move me away from my Vang Comp Mossberg 500. I like the ambidextrous controls on the Mossberg, which they could do pretty well if they worked at it. I think they could probably get close on the barrel too, do something that helps it group well specifically with buckshot like the Vang, the usual back bore and forcing cone work. Of course I have been told that this new Flite control Federal ammo is just as good as owning a tricked up shotgun.

What I'm only now realizing is that S&W doesn't sell a tactical shotgun like most other American firearms companies, but they sell cologne and bar stools and jackets. Why can I buy S&W cologne, but I can't buy a shotgun with a pistol grip and a folding stock?
Bump!

Well, I write to S&W every once in a while to ask about this. I don't know what else I can do? I guess they'll make one if they see fit.
