Just finished the set of birdseye Culinas and put them on my 10-10. I used just several coats Tung oil with sanding or 0000 steel wool between each coat. Finished them off with Renaissance wax.

What a beauty!Birdseye maple is,in my opinion one of the top woods for gun grips and gun stocks.
Tell me,what are those letters,CDC below the cylinder?

That's California Department of Corrections. If you have a copy of the Standard Catalog of Smith & Wesson (4th ed.), go to page 206 about 1/2 way down the page on the left, it has a description of the Department's special order of this model.

Nice wood!!

That weapon is familiar. My wife, sisters and myriad CDC friends carried the M10 until just recently. My wife hated qualifying with em, she love the mini 14 and HK 94 before that. I was on the CDC and CYA advisory board for years.

I retired from the AF in 85 and went to work for CDC in 86 and retired in 02. I was the Armory sergeant at CMF and held that position at the Academy when I retired. I understand the Department has gone to the Glock .40 caliber now. I still like those wheel guns and collect S&W revolvers, just had to have the model 10 when I saw it with CDC etched on it. It had Pacmyer (sp?) grips when I purchased it so I got the maple set unfinished from John Culina and finished them with Tung oil.

Seeing the pictures, the wood must be "Bubble Maple". It isn't Birdseye, though it looks somewhat like it. Instead of "eyes" it has iridescent circles that capture light differently than the rest of the wood. They look really great! Glad you enjoyed finishing them and have them on your new 10-10. Thank you for sharing!

Thanks Jennifer, I didn't know there was such a thing as Bubble Maple. I don't care what type wood it is, John and you put out a great product. I'm looking for a pre-lock 629 and if and when I find one, you'll be hearing from me.

Those are some beautiful stocks, OldChief. You did a great job of finishing them off.

I have a set of N square stocks in Jatoba wood on order myself for my 25-2 I picked up a couple of months ago. I'm getting them with the speedloader cutout instead of the football cutout since the 25 uses moon clips.

I have a 625-2 in .45 ACP that I put John's walnut grips on. They have the football cut and I haven't had any problem loading with the full moon clips. I also have a 25-5 in .45 Colt and they're both great shooters. Of course I have a set of John's walnuts on that one too.

I didn't have any particular problems with the stock S&W targets with the football cutout and loading up moonclips, but I do have a 29-6 that has a set of John's football targets that does have problems with using a speed loader and the cases also try hanging up on the stock when ejecting them too. So I might put these new stocks on it and put the ones on the 29-6 on the 25-2.

It doesn't hurt to try, use whatever works the best.
