100yd shot

They neglected to add. He was at a full gallop on his own mount, while holding the reins of the other two horses.

Under those circumstances it was a very lucky shot. However, I believe it was the right thing to do. That guy was actively attempting to kill people. Sometimes you just have to take the shot.

Too bad the good officer wasn't wearing one of those body cameras that have been getting media attention lately.

I'd liked to have seen that shot. ;)

Yall need to get out and try shooting at long range sometimes, you just might surprise yourself. Note, that story never made the claim that just one shot was fired, so multiple attempts do increase the odds of a good hit. In addition he was holding 2 Mounted Police horses in check and they may have been trained to act as a shooting support. If so, that officer was shooting from a pretty stable rest because a properly trained horse can stand nearly as still as a Statue. That leaves using the sights well as the remaining issue and with good eyesight and enough practice a good shooter can string shots into a 12 inch target from a rest at 100 yards nearly at will. As for doing this offhand, your hit rate on that 12 inch target may drop by about 50% but that can still be good enough to do the job.

He also knew the ballistics of the round he shot. Without looking it up, if your carry gun is sighted for 15-25 yards, how far will your carry ammo drop at 100 yards?
Hint: On an average 4.25 inch barrel, sighted at 25 yards, Gold Dot 40S&W, 165grain HP will drop 8.9 inches.

Old LEO Firearms trainer and precision shooting advocate here. I zero my service pistols to shoot spot on at 50 yards. So zeroed, a neck hold with typical 165-180 grain 40 S&W service loads will get you a torso hit every time. I can do it reliably from a sitting position shooting over one knee, and frequently shooting two-hand, standing unsupported. I will admit that I've never tried it in the dark, one handed and holding the reins of both my horses. I have no doubt this lad can shoot; but I suspect the Good Lord or lady luck had a hand in the shot.

The important thing here is that the officer drove the OODA cycle like a dragster. He picked a course of action, committed to it and followed through, securing a good outcome. My hat is off to him for that, as well as his skill at arms.

Crazy things happen. One thing is certain, "If you don't shoot, you won't get," as the old-timers always said. I am not quite as optimistic as the Chief but certainly compliment the officer for actually shooting, rather than standing around "waiting for SWAT."
