I have a rough looking 1006 that I've been thinking of sprucing up, but decided I should check how accurate it was before I invested much time. Thus far I am not impressed; at 15 yards off a rest (i.e. solid support but no sandbags or other gun holding device) I am getting about 4" best and 7" at worst with a variety of ammo types. Every 2nd/3rd gen 9mm I've owned (7 or 8) has shot more along the lines of 3" or less at that distance with just about any load I fed it. So what have you guys typically seen and are there any factory loads (I'm not bothering to reload at this point) that have been better for you than others?
1006 Accuracy, what should I expect?

My 1006 will easily shoot groups half that size, even with me at the controls.

On sandbags mine will keep Silvertips in a paperplate at 100 yds.

These two targets were shot with my standard 1006 from about 25 feet. I used a standing two-hand hold with no other support. The ammo was Federal American Eagle 180gr FMJ. This is about the same as my 1066 and 1076.
Here's my 1006 from about 50 ft. Ammo was 180 gr. handloads.
My standard 1006 averages about 3" 5-shot groups off the 25-yard bench. There are about 12 different handloads with varying bullets, powder, and primers, that make up this average. This accuracy is about the same as other 9mm (Glock, Springfield XD) and 40s&w (Ruger P94, 4006) autoloaders in my collection. So the 1006 is in line with what I would consider average, nothing special.
I once owned a 1066;It was the most accurate Pistol I ever owned. It loved BlueDot powder and Sierra 180 grain bullets. Another that I regret letting get away.Try that combo in the 1050 fps range in your 1006 and you may be pleasantly surprised...Joe

My son and I regularly shoot my 1006 at 4" steel plates at 85 yards from a rest. At that range we hit em all day long no problem. The
10mm is such a flat shooter you just line up the sights and squeeze.
No fuss, no drama.
Something seems askew here if you're talking 4-7" groups at 15yards.

Ok you're not shooting reloads, that's one less thing, so are the sights tight? Recoil spring good? I'd start by changing ammo brands or at least bullet weights. How's the trigger? It's a big round are you flinching?
The 10mm in general has an excelent reputation for accuracy. Much better than the .40S&W, as good as the best .45 or 9mm for certain.
Using a sandbag rest you should be getting much smaller groups than that. Maybe you should have the gun looked at to make sure the barrel is fitted right and everything is locking up the way it should.
If it's still a problem the muzzle can be squared and recrowned pretty easily.
If that doesn't do it, other than re-barreling (and here fitting is the crucial part) there isn't a lot of accuracy tuning that you can do to 3rd gen S&Ws. If it was me and I wanted to keep the gun (they don't exactly grow on trees), I'd call Novaks and see what they say might be wrong, they really know these guns. If you think there's something really wrong you could try S&W. They will probably be more concerned with safety than accuracy but you never know.

I've never heard of a 1006 that shot that poorly.
Something substantial seems amiss...
The 1006s I've owned would put 100 shots in 3" or less at 50 yards or less -- regardless of load off a rest.
Frequently, I'd have 1.5-inch, three-shot groups at 25 yards. The first one I ever bought -- the day of the Rodney King riots -- still shot almost that well after probably 6,000 rounds -- at least 75% of which were hot.
Yours sounds as if it's been abused...

I don't have a 1006, but I have access to several 1076s. We took a couple of them out for a demo day recently and I did some shooting while waiting for the folks to show up. At 15yds I was easily keeping 5-shot groups in 2" or less while shooting freestyle (both hands) standing. The previous time we took them out I was shooting at an 8x10" steel plate at 75yds and don't think I missed a single shot.
I'd check to make sure there isn't a dark ring anywhere in the bore that might indicate a bulge from a squib getting stuck and then a second bullet being fired behind it. After that, I'd clean the barrel well...run a wet patch down it, let is soak for 10-15min and repeat until dry patches come out nearly clean. R,
