All,

I just picked up a 1066, something I've wanted for a while. And I finally got it!

Anyways, I'm new(ish) to pistols and even newer to Pre-M&P Smiths.

I've read these are tanks; built when 10mm was still 10mm, not .40 +P. So, naturally I've heard they have fully supported chambers. Looking at mine, it seems like some metal is missing, but I don't know so that's why I'm asking y'all. Can anyone tell me if this is normal? Also, comparing it to my 3913TSW, the chamber seems looser; almost like a Glock chamber. Is this an issue? Lastly, the rifling is a bit worn. I'll replace it eventually. Would y'all recommend buying a [factory] replacement barrel from Midway or take a gamble on Numrich for $100 less?

The reason I'm concerned is because I bought a 10mm to shoot real loads. If I wanted mild-medium loads, I would have bought a .40.

Anyways, here are the pictures. The 3913TSW barrel is for comparison. Please tell me what y'all think. Thank you.

Regards
Franz

Sorry to say, but the pictures look like someone with a Dremel was trying cure a feeding problem. :(

Thank you. That's what I thought (and was afraid of), too.

Any thoughts on what the best replacement option is?

Yep my take also. I own a 1066 and regularly run full house Underwoods in mine with no issues. Had a Glock 29 when my Son gave me the S&W for a birthday present. First time to the range with both and the Smith made the Glock feel like a cheap toy in comparison.
That 1066 is worth getting right as IMO those are the finest 10mm's out there!
My 1066 before I dumped the nasty Houge grips for a new set of factories.

After closer inspection under a bright light, I found the telltale circumferential scratches on the top and sides at the edge of the chamber. :(

The chamber itself doesn't look messed with, so I'm guessing the looseness is by design.

EDIT:
My expensive camera that makes phone calls didn't want to focus, so this is the best pic I could take. You can kinda make out the scratching on the top (bottom of picture).

I agree. I like my Glock 19, but it doesn't have the same feel as my 3913.

After the 3913, I fell in love with the Smith autos. My 1066 is built like a brick sh!thouse. It feels more robust than my Rock Island 1911 in 10mm.

That's what threw a flag; solid gun with a goofy-looking chamber/feed ramp?

I don't have a picture of my 1076's barrel/chamber but I just looked at it & it compares favorably to the 4013(R4) large frame below. Not sure how it compares to your's.

You are always better off going with a new factory barrel than a used take-off. Used means, you don't know where it's been and what it's done and if it will be any better than what you have.

I bought the first Model 1006 I saw back in early 1990 and while it doesn't have a lot of rounds through it, some of what it has eaten was really warm. The original Norma 10mm rounds were awesome. It's a strong gun. People who loved the original 10mm stuff gave all sorts of nicknames to the later reduced stuff, such as 10mm Minus-P, the Attenuated Ten and such.

I would call S&W and see if a new barrel is available. Midway or Brownells might have one also. I would not shoot the gun with that barrel in it.

I would not shoot the gun with that barrel either.

I had some concerns, but now that I know for sure what it is, it will not be shot.

I placed an order with Numrich and called them to let them know exactly what I was looking for (an un-bubba-ed chamber), so they can pull a good part instead of the next one on the shelf.

If the Numrich barrel is junk, I'll send it back and reach out to S&W or Midway/Brownells.

Thanks y'all

The Numrich barrel arrived the other day. It looked in terrible condition when I got it; dull dark gray in color and tiny rust spots. But fortunately, this was all just surface grime from not being taken care of. A couple hour soak in #9, a copper brush and some polishing compound restored it to its factory matte look (Thank God for stainless).

The chamber clearly does not look modified and the rifling is a little better than my old one.

From what I can tell, the barrel fits nicely. Everything seems snug and I can't feel anything rubbing while manipulating the slide. I manually cycled a magazine through it and if fed and ejected every round fine.

The only thing left to do is test fire it, which I'll do Thursday and post results.

Test fired today, shoots great. No issues other than one misfeed which I attribute to a worn magazine spring. My Wolff order is backordered.
