1066 Value?

I picked up a 1066 from a friend. I had promised myself that I would not pick up any gun in a caliber that I didn't already have. There are 2 gun shows this weekend where I may try to sell it. It came with 2 factory mags, dead night sights, custom wood grips, and is in VG condition. Also has a period correct but non matching Smith plastic box. THIS IS NOT a petition for a sale. Interested in present value and approximate date of manufacture. Serial number is THC17XX.

A couple more questions come to mind. The wood grips have a standard screw head on both sides of the grip instead of a roll pin. I have seen the standard plastic grips for sale but I'm guessing I'd need a roll pin. Where to buy the roll pin? The dead night sights have a barely visible "H3" on the rear sight. I'm thinking that means they are Trijicon and can be relamped??

Your 1066 is a later model, and if you can score a few more 10XX-series mags in good condition that’s definitely a plus.

But selling it through an online auction site is the better move. There, you’ll likely get closer to $1400.00 for a 2 mag 1066 in excellent condition. More, if it comes with more mags. (Figure to add +$100.00 to the sale for each additional mag).

At Fun Shows, the table dealers fall into two categories: flippers and low-ballers. Even a 2-mag 1066 isn’t likely to pull more than $1K in that forum, unless maybe you sell it to a private buyer outside in the parking lot. Then you might get $1200 cash.

Hard to say without more pics and w/o knowing how many factory 8-rd mags come with the gun.

Decent to exc condition 45XX mags with the later black followers are $80-$85 bucks when you can find them … though not as spendy as the 10XX mags.

The 1066 and 4566 are essentially the same gun, almost. Sort of.

I think I paid about $600 for my 4566. I thought I got a good deal.
Oh well.

I do like the 4566 for the shorter barrel, and checkering on the front strap instead of the serrations. Mine is reliable. And it shoots good. It always groups a little low. I wish there was a way to fix that other than an LPA.

A shorter front sight will correct that. I've done that on my 6906. Now POA = POI.

But that solution has its own set of problems in that I can’t find a front sight without the radio active glowing glass vial. I have taken the front sight of my 4566 down as far as I dare already.
The gun used to shoot even lower than what it does now.

I’ve dealt with dovetail sights on slides enough to know that quite often those sights are nearly a crush fit. The factories have specialized equipment that the average person doesn’t have access to. And yes, I have a sight pusher tool.

So I sent the slide to a company that specializes in manufacturing and installing sights. I told them exactly what was going on. They put their lowest sight on. And it had to have the tritium vial in it. Because EVERYBODY must have a glow in the dark front sight. It must be a law or something.

An inch and a half low is better than the 6 inches low I started with.

I’ve given up. But I’m open to suggestions. But please don’t insult me by giving me rudimentary instructions on how to adjust sights. I had that concept grasped day one, which was a long time ago.

Hogue's aftermarket grips (both rubber & wood) use a threaded screw to secure the grip to the frame on 3rd Gen S&W auto pistols. This screw replaces the factory grip pin. New factory S&W grip pins are readily available for under $4.00, from several online retailers (S&W part #106070000).

If a lower front sight didn’t correct the POA/POI issue, typically the problem is user-induced.

Remedial range practice is indicated, …. or at least let another veteran 3rd Gen shooter test your gun and see if he duplicates (or not) the low-impact issue.

Be sure he shoots the same ammo from the same distance as you did. Controlling for variables matters.

That particular letter and its proliferation across the internet is THE reason that folks continually try to sell examples of the Model 1046 for over four thousand dollars.

I didn’t realize(remember) there were only 5k 1066s. I’ve owned all of these at one time except the 1046. I chased one for about 2 years and gave up. I even knew people who had more than 2 and would not sell 1 of them. So I just lost interest in that persuit. My only remaining is a 1066. I do plan to sell it and some others eventually but I’m new to Tucson and finding an FFL that will ship to another FFL for an individual is becoming frustrating. These could probably go on the C&R list even though they are only 35 years old. They would qualify I’m sure , but need an advocate who is interested and has know how into submitting them.

4566 & 4506 and other BS is getting a bit off-topic? 10xx are unique and unlikely to go under $1000 unless seller is clueless or desperate. Mags frequently go in excess of $100. Lots more options (more models and higher quantities) in 45xx.

As to the value of the 1066, the above post is in my opinion the best answer to the value question without a picture of the actual pistol. I would have said 1000-1400 depending on sale venue and buyer. Correct grips and retaining pin are readily available.

Best option in my opinion is Classifieds below. No GB or other Auction House fees and more knowledgeable buyers. Better return for you and better value for buyer. Even better if you can do face to face and avoid shipping which seems to have increased significantly for firearms in last year.
