Hi, all. I need help identifying a gun that's up for sale in one of my hunting forums. I'm pretty sure it's a good deal, but I'd feel better if I knew exactly what it is. I haven't been able to use the the info I have to pin down which variant. The seller has posted a few pics (attached) but doesn't have the box or know much else about it. I've asked him to check, but the barrel looks to be 6 1/2". It's marked Classic and shows that it's a 629-4. The barrel is ported, and it's got rounded grips. I've looked in the Standard Catalog and can't find CBY as a serial number prefix. How unusual is that? Any other thoughts?

It is a 629 Classic Powerport.
My 4th Edition SCSW doesn't list the CBY prefix, which is common. Apparently the author(s) did their best in accumulating s/n prefixes but some/many prefixes are missing. I believe a call to S&W will usually result in the call-taker to inquire into their internal database for an accurate answer regarding manufacturing date.

629 DX Classic would be a great find. This one is interesting. If you check it for cylinder timing and lockup, and it is decent, there is little risk. Grips are changeable. Enjoy life and purchase what you can when you can.
