I just recently bought a Glock 20 and have been doing a ton of reading on the the round. While I will be using watered down FBI type loads for home defense, I did read about a case where a man named Fish was convicted in what appeared to be a clean shooting. One of the factors was the large caliber he used. This may be a question for Mr. Ayoob but anyone know if there would be any legal implications in using a 10mm in self-defense situation.

This really sums up how screwed up our legal system is. A justified shooting is a justified shooting. Why should it matter if 22, 44, 12 ga or a 50 bmg. I just can't comprehend why it makes a difference.

Anytime you use a gun of ANY caliber for self defense you take a chance of being treated like Mr Fish. Unknowing overzealous attorneys exist everywhere. Just make sure you get a good one. Carrying a 10MM wouldn't bother me a bit.

I see you're in Louisiana. I think we have a good attorney around here from Louisiana.:p

Yeah, I know. His opinion would be greatly valued! I will say anytime the other party is unarmed it seems to lead to a legal mess. Some "experts" say the 10mm is bad carry round because the FBI and most LEOs dropped due to being too powerful. Basically making one look like a "Dirty Harry" in court. Which makes no sense, all those FBI load hollow points are basically big .40SWs.

The Fish case was beaten beyond death on several forums, including this one. A search should make those available. Without reading the actual trial transcript, it's difficult to comment meaningfully. Relying on press coverage isn't really a good idea. Since an act of the legislature freed Mr. Fish, you can get some idea of the extent of the appearance of the 'justice' involved.

Having said that, it's good to remember cases like this before you yank out a pistol.

We were issued the full power 10 for about 16 years. Being kind, it's not an optimal round for the purpose but it's not as bad as some would have you believe. The 10mm lite (FBI spec) rounds are defensible as being virtually twins of the popular .40 S&W, used by many police departments.

Thanks again. I will say they full power 10mm is quite powerful, so I will regulate those type of loads for camping and fishing. For home defense and CC use I think I will use 10mm FBI load, like the Hydra-Shok. It preforms like a .40, and I would think recoil would be lighter than a .40 due the the G20 being a bigger gun than most .40s.
