Throughout my adult life, I've never paid much attention to my own birthday. It's always been just a day, no more or less than any other, except that I shared it with Nostradamus. Two years ago this morning, I went into school to learn that a former student, only one grade removed from my class, had passed on due to complications from kidney disease. He was in 9th grade. One year ago this morning, I watched the coverage of a breaking story about a crazed gunman who had slaughtered two dozen people at a school in a town I had lived in for short period of time long ago. Two consecutive years, two school-related incidents on the birthday of this educator.
This morning, I awoke to a steady snowfall. It has been snowing all day, with the tranquility of the neighborhood only disturbed by shoveling and an occasional plow truck passing by. My little Diva Shooter presented me with a beautiful Spider Man sleep shirt and homemade card. The news has not provided any tragedies thus far, and I plan to spend my evening grading a pile of high school exams.
Bad things don't always happen in 3s. Happy birthday to me.
God speed to all of you and your families.
