Beautiful Maine!
Hi All,
Looking for a date on my 14-3 w/5" barrel and target trigger, hammer and grips. Serial# is K854197. I find it odd the last digit appears to be a 7 stamped over a 3 or 8.
Thanks!

Probably shipped in 1969.

That is the 6" barrel, not 5"

The stocks are much newer than the gun - 1979 or later.

Pull the stocks and see what the serial number on the butt looks like. That one is the "official" number anyway.

Hi again!
I pulled the stocks, and the S/N there matches what's on the crane.
So I'm puzzled... I measured the barrel again, and it measures 5" from the frame to the muzzle... what am I missing here?
Also, I'm asking as a neophyte- always looking to improve my knowledge- how can you tell the grips are later grips please??
Thanks for educating me!

You need to measure from the muzzle to the front of the cylinder.
That is the barrel length.

The full speedloader cut out on the left panel didn't appear on the K frames until about 1978 or 1979. From the mid-1950s until then, it had what is known as a "football" cut, which was intended to allow extraction without damaging the wood. If your revolver shipped with target stocks (most K-38 Masterpiece revolvers, including the Model 14, shipped with Magna stocks), they would have been the football type.

I have one made a little later than yours and it is a pure pleasure to own and shoot.I hope you enjoy yours as much as I have enjoyed mine.

This is what a 5" Model 14 looks like.
