Folks: This weekend is the 21st anniversary of the South Canyon Fire just west of Glenwood Springs Colorado.

My family is over there now enjoying the Hot Springs. I just drove past the fire site on Monday, and I just had to google to recall the incident.

I discovered an amazing and compelling Youtube video by the survivors. It is two parts and takes about an hour and a half. It is a remarkable tribute to these brave people, both living and dead.

Eatch if you can. This summer is going to be very bad here in the West.

Be sure to do part 2!

You MUST read "Young Men and Fire" about the Mann Gulch Fire. Written by Norman MacLean ("River Runs Through It")

And then read his son John MacLean's "Fire on the Mountain" about this fire here. He doesn't write quite as poetically as his father, but he is a first-rate researcher, and all his wildfire books (the most recent one, "The Esperanza Fire", is about the notorious 2006 arson case in SoCal), are all superb and well worth reading.

Thanks for the tip.

I live in Washington and watched the flames from the Wenatchee Fire this last week (on the hill above our house). Wife was evacuated from her office. My office is co-located with USFS, so we get the inside scoop daily (I am also FEMA certified, and Haz Mat trained). Between my wife and I, we have been evacuated 3 times in 12 years.

Being in such a community and working daily with smoke-jumpers and Hotshots, give you real insight.
