14 is old enough to babysit in the afternoon and to know how to use a gun. The only people worrying would be the usual bed wetters. I hate it for the kid, he'll never be the same, but he did what he had to do to protect himself and his family.

I'll have to say though after reading the article, there is a little bit of fishy smell to the scenario.

Agree with above post, something is fishy. I understand the father being upset over the thing but so upset that he cant speak? His son had the courage to take over the situation and shoot the BG, but the father cant talk???? humm....ok.

One could wonder if there is a reason the house was targeted. A person who appears to be low risk being the one to knock at the door is not unusual, and thank goodness the kid had the sense to not answer/open the door. Before my fence, I had not opened the door to the unexpected/unknown in years.

Dad being upset? Who knows what level of emotional stability any given person has. It seems odd that it is so extreme, but I have met some folks with very strange responses to stress.

More than likely both the man and the woman were Tweekers (meth users). My area has had serveral daytime burglaries committed by tweekers. Once they're on meth, they can't get off.

We should wait to see whats behind the story. Might be a good chance they were known to the family or had business dealings. Also the woman is on the loose. In this sue happy society a person can hardly open their mouth. How many times have we heard of criminals sueing their victims? You can be dead right but it still costs you to protect yourself. Anybody can sue anybody. I wouldnt make anything of the father not makeing a public statement. Gosh, has a cop EVER made a fast public statement or even been identified even after a rightous shooting? And they have faaar more people and power standing behind them than does joe citizen!

Followups indicate that the local cops don't believe the goblins and the good guys in this mess have any connections.
I believe that the dad is following RULE 1 - Keep your mouth shut till you talk to a lawyer!

If you don't deal with the CJS you need someone that does BEFORE you make any statements..............

There are those who will ask questions why these young children were left home alone and say that the gun should have been locked away. If the gun had been locked up, these children could be dead. They are alive today thanks to quick thinking on the part of this young man.

For all we know the gun was locked up and the boy had been instructed and knew how to use it for exactly this reason.
After something like this give them some privacy. I would guess one reason the family does not want to talk is that it will be bad enough with the news hounding them to talk about it, and the small kids and their house will be staked out by the news for as long as they can stand to be there.
The boy did good, I would hope we and all our families could be this prepared if the unthinkable like this happens. Good luck to the family to get over this.
