15-2 (scope mount removed) UPDATED

I just won this and got it for pretty cheap. I took a gamble on the condition and the rail mount.


Is anyone familiar with this type of mount?

Is it easily removable and will fixed sights be able to be re installed?

I am not sure about that mount, but I do know that model 15's came with adjustable rear sights.

Looks like the front may just clamp to the frame and the rear may use a screw in the stock location.

Please remove that. Seems like a solution in search of a problem to me. A 4" 38 with a scope makes as much sense as a football bat.

I plan on returning it to original as possible. I won it in a penny start for $289!

Looks like a "No gunsmith mount." Just removing the top screws and possibly a side clamp screw and it should just come off. There should be the slotted cavity to accommodate a S&W adjustable sight. Some of the sights can be found on E'bay or possibly new at Brownell's.

Picked it up today. Changed out the grips. Gave it a little cleaning. Now I need a rear sight. It has a wider target trigger. Not bad for the gamble price!

Just make sure it's for a -2 or earlier. S&W relocated the sight leaf screw with the -3.

The front of the rear sight isn't fully seated.
Use a padded clamp between the bottom front of the frame and the front of the rear sight base, compress it and snug the front sight screws down.

The sight you received is for a 2" revolver since the front end goes all the way to the end of the frame. Longer barreled sights stopped about a 1/4" from the end of the frame.
If you raise the rear elevation screw until it almost lets go, the front screw will be easier to tighten down.

It came pretty badly bent. I flattened it out overnight with a weight and that was as far as I could get it.

The bend was not disclosed or shown on eBay but I'm ok with it for now.
