15-22 Bullpup V2

I realize that using an AR type firearm you are between a rock and a hard place. If you don't include the stock FCG and lower with its serial number it becomes a firearm in itself and requires licensing and approval to sell. And if you do include the OEM lower then you have to have a window where the original serial number can be seen without disassembly. Except of course if you build it for personal use it is in the realm of an 80% AR lower or an undrilled AK receiver blank.

The idea of using the factory lower is a great idea except it violates rule 1. I am not cutting off my buffer tube just to get a Bullpup because I cannot put it back the way it was and would destroy the value of the 15-22 as well as violating the law. I believe cutting off the buffer tube turns the 15-22 into a pistol, which I think you need a tax stamp to do.
My only option was to create my own lower and try to make it easy enough that it could be sold as a 80% lower, rule 5.
My biggest issue is the mag release. as of right now I am using the standard AR15 parts to keep it simple. It works well but not as fast as using your trigger finger because my left hand pushes the button and installs the new mag.

I like the direction you are going. The beauty of your idea is just bolt on the upper and go. When done, replace original lower and your good to go.

Looking forward to you continued progress.

Looks good !!

One suggestion...I would try to make a cheek rest that attaches to the top of the picattiny rail. In the pic your cheek is on the rear sight, I would think a red dot would be all that is needed for this close range tactical type setup. Maybe a little texture would dress up the body of the lower.

A cheek rest is in the works and it will also incorporate a brass deflector. As for the texture, the idea is the gun will be closer to your face and I will want it as smooth as possible. Remember, this is a prototype and only represents the real thing in its shape, not finish. V2 was made to correct a few things on V1 and to incorporate some of the good ideas from members on this board. It is also a working prototype which I may actually fire but it was intended to test the functionality of the different systems, the trigger mostly and the mag release.

So this is all plastic you're working with or wood? If plastic how are you making the molds? Just curious. Very proffesional looking prototypes.

your prototype is getting better and better! Fantastic! good luck in your further developments, I for one would love to have one just like it.

QuiQNeZZ, the first three prototypes will be made from wood. Wood is easy to acquire and inexpensive. It is also stronger than you think and I could fire the weapon with a wood lower. V4 will be made of black Nylon which is very tough but expensive and is why it will be V4 before I use it. All parts are cut on a CNC machine so they will be very precise but not as fast as injection molding.

I really love how this is coming out. If you start selling these, I will buy one day one. Of course I have to pick up another 15 22 to put it in. Lol

Blasted from my Samsung Galaxy SIII (CM10.1 Masta Mix).

This has a lot of potential, good on ya! I'll be in line to get one of these.

Awesome wood working skills and awesome tools you must have.:D

Few more questions. You stated that the over the barrel addition has caused some problems. I was wondering how big the hole is going to be in the final version? I ask because I wanted to know if you were going to take into consideration those that might want to add a barrel shroud. The larger ones from Kineti-tech are 2" outside diameter I believe and the barrell hole on your bullpup would need to be a fraction bigger to accomodate this as well as the tacticool shroud which is slightly smaller in diameter.

Just wondering. Keep up the good work. Will be very interested in the final version.

QuiQNeZZ it was your idea to cover the barrel. I was contemplating it originally but gave up and then you made the suggestion so I gave it a shot in V2 and I totally like it now.. The issues are that the lower needs to be in two equal sides so there needs to be a fastening area at the top of the cover. This will require more meat at the top creating weight but not too bad. Also the barrel must easily pass through this cover so the hole must be large enough to handle at least the stock flash hider, which it does. The other issue is what you just touched on. The Bullpup is only 1 1/2" thick and will not accommodate anything over 15/16"going through the cover. If someone has a can its not going to fit through the cover so the can must be installed after the upper is installed into the lower.
