I have a 15-22 that I have built up for squirrel hunting and after a good trigger I am quite surprised by its accuracy. I like the idea of a red dot but when adding a magnifier I have noticed that a lot of light seems to go away. I am not going to put an eo tech or other expensive dot and magnifier. I am thinking one of the 1X4 powers out there like the burris mtac or Mueller speed shot. The speed shot combines a dot and magnification in one. I am just a little unsure on the dot, afraid it may be too big. The Mtac I really like but am afraid that the reticle may cover too much of the squirrel up and cluster things. Not interested in a conventional scope, I have several. Want to try something a little different. Any thoughts appreciated.

The speed shot has a 4MOA dot. So it will cover 4 inches at 100 yards, or 2 inches at 50 yards, etc. The nice thing about it is the dot is etched and will be black when the illumination is off. The 1x setting is not a true 1x, it still has slight magnification. My leupold prismatic is the same way. It's a little weird at 1st, but you can used to it and it is very useable with some work.
A shooting buddy of mine has one on an AR15 and he is very happy with it and it is holding up very well.

I've been looking at a very similar scope - the Accushot 1-4.5x28 . . . .
The specifications state that the dot is 2MOA with a 36MOA circle around it. It is etched and also lighted with 36 different colors.

Okay... so a conventional crosshair scope is out of consideration.
Here's a way to use a larger sized dot instead of crosshairs. Zero using the top edge of the dot like the below comparing a crosshair to a dot. As distances increase, you can also use the bottom edge of the dot for holdover. As far as the size of a 4MOA dot... Keep in mind that the front sight post on your rifle covers over a foot of the target in width at 100yds. Understand that you won't be using irons with a magnified optic, but just as a comparative.
I use a 4MOA and 3MOA 1x red dot. I find them much easier to use than a 2MOA dot for the intended purpose of fast target acquisition. For precision shooting... magnification and crosshairs.

Thank you for that note. Only thing keeping me from pulling the trigger is that I have read a few reviews where the reticle is slightly canted a few degrees. Otherwise it would be about perfect. Looked at the mtac today, was like looking through a high def tv...wow.
