Looking at a couple, kind of like the uniqueness of the dash 8. They are a little pricey but not outrageous. Aware of the alloy cylinder issues. Pro's Con's ? Thanks

A friend has one and had issues with the cylinder. S&W replaced it with a stainless steel one at no cost including to and fro shipping. He is very happy with it now. If you want it go for it--- you only go around once.

That should be an excellent shooter, I think you'll be very happy with it.

All of my Model 17s from the dash 8 engineering revision have carbon steel cylinders

I love the look of the new 4 screw frame and the non-rib barrel

I actually have more than one of them and the two that I have fired are absolutely great shooters. I did change the grip as I find the old style grips to be a little small and uncomfortable for my hands

Wow thanks for the pictures. When I clicked on this thread I thought we were talking about the full lug barrel version. Somehow I have not seen this -8 version before. I too like the 4 screws and tapered barrel. Very cool 17!

Regular production 17-8's came with a 10-shot aluminum cylinder that develops a heavy turn line rather quickly. S&W replaced some of them with stainless cylinders because of customer complaints. They worked fine, but were discontinued for a reason...

The 17-8 pictured in a previous reply was a Heritage Series gun. That's a whole different kettle of fish! They were 6-shot Performance Center revolvers made with carbon steel cylinders. They were offered with several different finishes, including one with a case colored frame done by Doug Turnbull.

The 10 shot 17-8's were fine shooters but as said before the aluminum cylinder scored easily. The finish is a duller finish than earlier models . The people I know won't give them up and they're not seen to often . 17's are great guns and you really can't go wrong cause you're always going to get your money back.

I enjoy mine. The gas ring on my aluminum cylinder has taken a beating so I replaced it with a steel gas ring. Otherwise no issue with the aluminum cylinder. Barrel gap isn't great due to a taper on the barrel protrusion so I get some spitting. But I love shooting it. IMHO the matte finish is more black nitride than bluing and is very durable.

Well I found one at Cabela's in Idaho. Should have it down here in Florida in 3-4 days. Includes the blue case and some extras.
