Went by a pawn shop while at work today and found a nice 18-3. It had a pinned barrel, smooth target grips, TH & TT. Other than the turn line the finish was almost perfect. No box or tools. Here are my questions. Could this gun have come with the TH, TT, and smooth target grips? When did S&W quit pinned barrels on the 18? All my guns are shooters. I have been shooting my K-22 1946 a bunch. I really want a 4" K-22 maybe even a 617. Is this one worth 699+Tax? I offered a nice sw1911pd with box, 2 8 round mags, factory CT grips, and all paperwork as an even trade and the guy said he needed to research the 1911. I feel like the 1911 is worth 850. I thought this trade would happen fast and it did not. I can not rest knowing that gun is sitting that close to me. Thanks for the help, I don''t post much but I read a lot.

The asking price might go that high in Southern California. Where you are has a lot to do with it.

The pawn shop is there to make money. Even if the 1911 (et al) is worth the same or slightly more, he has to factor in trying to make his profit. You might make a cash offer, if you have the cash.

Good luck.

The pinned barrel was dropped in the 18-4 several years into that engineering change. Most 18-3's Ive seen and the one I own don't have the target trigger, target hammer, or smooth grips. I don't live in California or deal with their rules but around here it would be a $700 revolver at best and maybe less if the gun was altered. So if your 1911 is an $850 pistol I would say you are on the short end of the stick in this deal unless california prices say otherwise.

Thanks for the help, I thought this was high. Would no finish loss other than a turn line be 95%? I know we all rate differently but, I would have said 98% of more. Most of my shooter collection are 85% to 90% so this one might be too nice for me. Were TH & TT ever factory installed on 22s.

P.S. I am in NC not California.

To me a revolver with only a turn line is higher than 95% as I would say 98% but that's just me. I say that because a revolver can have a turn line and be unfired if someone sat there and dry fired it a lot.

I have an unpinned 18-4 that came with TT/TH and Magnas.

While the TT/TH combo is not common S&W would make them any way you wanted for a small upcharge.

Originality is not important in a shooter but you should be happy with your purchase.

The 18-3 is a fairly common model, while the grips add a little value IMO $799 is quite a bit high .

Cash talks, around here the typical pawnshop offers $150 for a used handgun.
With the advent of internet gunsales you have a nationwide supply of handguns to compare it to.

Maybe politely offer $450to $500 cash if they are rude thank them politely and walk,
If they counter offer go to $500 to $550 final offer.

All this is just my opinion and worth what you payed for it.

I agree with all of the above. You can bet your behind that the shop has maybe 30% of his asking price in that gun. Put five benjamins on the counter to show him you're not just dickering.

Where in north carolina arfe you? If its a pawn shop you can bet they didn't pay that much. I bought a mod 63 with bone grips and asked after the deal was done what he made he said 350 with pawn interest and profit. When I go to a pawn shop I realize they have to make a profit to stay open, but I also realize they will low ball me even if my children are hungry. If you like the shop be fair to yourself, if you don't like the shop low ball you never know. I've watched too many people get rediculous low ball offers from pawn shops. If they marked it up 100 % and you offer 20% over what they paid then they still made a profit. It's your money you decide what profit to them you are willing to pay. Always be willing to walk away S&W made a bunch of them and they are sold every day. Good luck! Doeboy
