My daughter is new to plate matches, she struggles to rack the slide on any of my bottom feeders. Her gun of choice is my 19 x 4", told her she could use a 6"686 w/ speed loaders, or 6"627 w/ moons.......
She said........."Awwwwwww Daddyeeeeee"
I said.......You can't use those Bunny Fart wad cutters you shoot for PPC, the plates and poppers will not go down........
She said........."Awwwwwww Daddyeeeeee"
I said.......It's a bigger bullet with almost twice the charge.......
She said........."No problem....I can handle it"
I said.......I'm sure you can, but I don't think the gun will.......
She said......... Awwwwwww Daddyeeeeee"
I need some unbiased support, running 158gn cast over 5gn 231, 357 brass, WSPM, at around 1100fps......Thanks.....2#

My Piggyback is set up for 5 gr. of 231 using 158 grain LSWCs in .38 spl brass. I've shot them out of my model 10s, 15s and 67 for many years. Now my son is shooting them out of his 15 too.

I vote your alright shooting them out of your 19.

Two pound,

Anything wears with use and the harder a revolver is pounded on a continous basis, the greater the wear.158 grains at 1100 fps from the K frame Smith shouldn't be too abusive and I suspect it will hold up very well.I'd use it without hesitation.

My normal .38 load is 4.9 gr. 231 behind a cast LRNFP. Chrono 906 fps, and very accurate. Shoot in my 10, 15-2, 15-3, 19-4, 686, Pre 27, victory, and Colt Officers Mod. Match.

Its only 500 more than 38spl +P+ and I have fired Many through my issue mod 15

I know what curiosity did to the cat 2#, but where did you get the pressure data? And what barrel length did you use to get the 1100fps with? Just curious.

Hodgdon Reloading Data.
Just thought they might be a little "warm" for a nice old revolver, especially since she has a lot of other choices.
As it turns out, I mounted a dot on the 686, I would rather she shoot without, but the optic swayed her........
The last round of team compitition, when the timer sounded, I made my gun safe, set it on the table and let her blast away at 23 reactive targets. There was nothing but cheers and encouragement from the crowd. As a team, we finished dead last, and I may have to spend a little more time at the reloading bench.........But who cares......
She had a great time........2#

Thanks 2#, I was just wondering because I checked a few of my Lyman manuals for comparison. They have several .38 spl+P loads using cast bullets from 155-160 grains and charges of 231 at 5.0 and 5.2 grains. Neither the velocities or the pressures are quite as high as Hodgdons site is listing, and they are using .38 spl brass.

I guess this is why they say to start low and work your way up.
