I have a new to me 19-5 in nickel. The front of the cylinder is black. I am having a rough time removing this black (lead/powder blast?) to the point that I wonder if it is supposed to be black. Any pointers are greatly appreciated!

Use your favorite solvent to remove surface carbon then remove the solvent with denatured (rubbing) alcohol. When dry, rub the darkened surface with a STAEDTLER Mars Plastic eraser. I would avoid other erasers as they are pretty agressive but the plastic type won't scar the nickle.

Don't use Hoppie's on it, I would use one of the lead wipe colthes that you can buy. It will save alot of time then for what is leaves behind can be tooken care of with some Mothers Mag Wax.

Dan Cash, Boat Fun,

What kind of solvent do you recommend prior to the use of the denatured alcohol. I have heard that ammonia containing solvents such as Hoppe's No. 9, etc., are not a good thing to use on nickel. That being the case, what solvent do you recommend? The idea of the Mars plastic eraser is genius!

Thanks!

The alchohol is to remove any oily residue left by the solvent so that it does not foul the eraser. I personally use Hoppes #9 but don't soak parts in it. A lot of folks say not to but I have not had any trouble over the years. Mineral spirits or turpentine will cut most carbon based crud.
