just got the last OGCA and was wondering as to if it is the 1st change or the 2nd change, as the barrel has the 2 line cartridge logo, and the ejector 'star' does NOT have the "pins", but does have the screw in front of the trigger guard....Mr Jinks said it was shipped in Sept of 1906.....

An interesting revolver and post. What is the revolver's serial number range? I may have its old raggy brother.

Serial Number 505XX

If I'm reading Neal and Jinks correctly, the presence or absence of a key slot for the rebound slide distinguishes first change (has the slot) from second change (doesn't).

Apparently the first and second change 1905s are intermixed in the serial number range between about 73000 and 146000.

That's a good looking gun. I just found at a price too low to pass up a similar 1905 with the elegant 6.5" barrel and a serial number around 100000. I'm looking forward to opening it up and diagnosing its classification.

If I am seeing that picture correctly, there is no screw in front of the
trigger guard. That makes this a somewhat late-ship Model of 1902.

It is a round butt, and that makes it a permanent 1902. However,
the collectors disagree about that - they take the position that
if it has the 5th frame screw in front of the trigger guard, its a
Model of 1905, regardless of the butt configuration.

If, in fact, there is no 5th frame screw, then its a Model of 1902.
If you send for a letter, mention that fact.

Yes Mike, the picture does'nt show it but I stated it does ,in fact have this "5th" screw" in front of the trigger guard...

No have NOT taken it 'apart' to look/see the slot configuration.....

Thanks guys.....................

Inside a 1905

Photos, as Steve requested.

This gun is a 1905 first change, S/N 102653; it probably shipped in 1907. This is the first K-frame that incorporated the trigger rebound slide design; the earliest versions of that mechanism had a key milled on the rear surface that rode in a keyway or channel cut into the frame. In this photo the rebound slide is upside down so you can see the key.

In both the first and second changes, the rebound slide had a patent date stamped on it: Feb 6, '06.

I don't have a photo, but as was mentioned in an earlier post the 1905/Firsts do not have the twin dowels in the cylinder that align the ejector star. Those dowels appeared with the second change.

Dan

Those are expensive grips. I haven't bought any recently, but they
ought to be worth at least $300, perhaps more. Nickel guns were
not-infrequently special ordered with pearl stocks, so if those are
original to the gun, you ought to keep it that way. They are very
nice.

Now I want to be opening-up my various early ones, to see these things.

Nice images there DCWilson...
