1911, no A1

I would love to have an original condition Colt 1911 from WWI or WWII. If I hadn't spent so much on Smith & Wessons, perhaps I could justify the cost. I do have a WWII Remington Rand that I bought in 1999. I have a Colt Series 70 and one of the new 1911s that Colt brought out. There is something about an original, been there and survived, piece of history. Maybe I should lay off the revolvers a while and just but one of these.

Eight rounds off hand. Only ten yards, but I'll take it. The sights are *very* challenging for my 57 year old eyes and the 6.75 pound trigger was not value added. But, very smooth operation otherwise. This was with 200 grain SWCs.

How can you tell if a M1911 has been molested or re-built?

That's a rabbit hole of a question. My best advice is to acquire a copy of Joe Poyers book on the 1911/1911A1. There are others, but they're out of print and cost a fortune.

You can consult Ty's Cool Gunsite.com. Lots of good information on all Military 1911 and 1911a1s. How to identify manufacturers, small part differences, arsenal rebuild marks, magazines, grips, etc. I used it in 2007 to school myself when purchasing my Ithaca 1943 1911a1 to determine if it was all original. I recommend. (see picture-box is reproduction, shiny spot on grip is reflection from flash)

I picked this 1918 war horse up at my neighborhood pawn shop last week for a bargain price. All original except for the hammer, but I have one in a drawer somewhere.
Target was shot at 20 yds with the worst .45 ammo I've ever seen. 230 gr. hardball that smoked like it was black powder.

VaTom - May I ask where you purchased that repro Ithaca box? Very cool! Thanks

It came with the Pistol. I bought the Pistol from a Winchester lever rifle collector who had bought an entire estate rifle collection and two WWII 1911a1s came with it. He was from a different state and I bought it off GB so I didn't know him personally. Sorry.
