I have a Brazilian 1917 that has a barrel problem. The whole thing is somewhat of a parts gun that has been rebuilt. The bore is great except that there is a dent in the bore right beside the front sight. Quite a dent in the outside too! It has displaced the rifling in the form of a bump about .010 high right on the top of a land. Is there any company that sells a replacement? As long as it has a good bore the outside could be almost in any condition. I have contemplated cutting the barrel off right in back of the front sight and using the blade reattached to the barrel, so would only loose about an inch of the barrel. But would rather have a full length barrel. Anyone have a barrel they are considering cutting off to make a shorty? Would trade if the bore was good, or does someone have an old one in there spares? The toolman.

You could 'back bore' the barrel from the muzzle to a depth that clears the damage. No need to go any further.
You will have a smooth bore back that far, no bigger in dia than groove depth is really necessary. The new crown is then just down inside the bore instead of at the outside end of the bbl.
Accuracy should not suffer, appearance neither unless one looks carefully at the interior of the bore and sees that it is smooth bore back in 1/2" or so.
Saves the orig bbl, ser# ect. No sight to change, no cutting the bbl off or rebluing to do.
A piloted reamer or a boring bar on a lathe are common methods.

Just one way to fix it.
Spare bbl's are hard to come by in my experience. Then there's the fitting,,, indexing & cyl gap.

I have what appears to be a Brazillian made replacement barrel that I was going to use to replace a ringed M1937 factory barrel, but later decided to just live with the ringed original barrel. Send me a PM if you have any interest in it. The barrel is unmarked on the right side, and stamped "FABRICA DE ITAJUBA" on the left. Length is 5.5" and has a half-moon front sight (same profile as factory).

Murdock, I would be very interested in your barrel for the Brazillian 1917 to replace mine with the dent in the side. Send me a PM and will respond. Best regards, the toolman.
