1917 Hotroding.

I have a chopped nickel 17 that needs a front sight (silver slider will not bond) interested in suggestions.

Here is some more photos, I finished primary shaping of the other side, it has some nice grain to it. I also included some photos comparing to a K frame 64-2 snub. it I set both of them up on end(top of frame down) they are exactly same height.

Tommy - check your PM

The one I did I used the rib and front sight off of a trashed M-28 barrel. Soft soldered it on, so if I change the Parked finish I'll need to rust blue it. Mark

This is a very interesting project, happy to see you're working on it again.

A Few more progress photos

Well here we go with a few more updates. grip pin is installed and grips drilled for it. More shaping done today but still a little bulky and square, going to knock another .050" of thickness each side and round it out some more. Installed the trigger and hammer for photos sake. Second photo showing that I ended up with nice bookend bottoms.

On a side not, if anyone has a set of large medallions, or seriously tore up grips that would be awesome right about now.

I will be making a second set of magna style grips from bone and ink in the checkering

I really love seeing this stuff keep it up. there's not enough variety for my tastes, so bring it on. Make what you want, if you can, or have it made. Its your firearm, build it, love it, use it. Its a short life

as mentioned i will be making a second set of magna style grips. Right now im just finishing the shape and sanding on these grips. Im also looking at how i want to work the front sight right now. Im thinking i will just put the half moon back on so i can get this thing to some sort of finished state, as i will probably do a few more of these down the road.

I really like what you are doing to the old warhorse :D
Wish i could own one just like that.

I like everything but the shortened grip. Have been wanting a 45 acp carry gun and think th1917 has great potential. I can't wait to see the finished gun

Well I've been going back and forth on the front sight, I don't have access to a mill like I use to right now. Thought about the king style police night sight arrangement as well.

Mr usnrigger, regardless of whatever else you do on this project, when you get settled in and are taking work from those of us with more thumbs than fingers, please, please, please get set up and offer the King-style "Police Night Sight" conversion to the public. I for one would send at least one snubby immediately with a couple more to follow. Of all the great work that was available from the old King Gun Works, this is probably the one for which there is no modern substitute available. I followed this thread when it originally appeared and I'm very impressed with your work so far. I can hardly wait to hear where you go and when you will be taking work from the public.

Best regards,
Charlie the Green Frog

I used a Williams Shorty Ramp on one N frame fixed sight project revolver. Modified a front sight blade to match. The dovetail will allow windage adjustment.

A.E. Nelson makes an "Untouchables" shoulder holster. Similar to the Lawrence #7. Will probably get one for my 6.5 inch 2nd Model HE 44 Special.

Green Frog, I will most definitely be offering King inspired sights/ribs, and I may have a shop up and going in the very near future.

Update: I was able to get the factory half moon sight soldered on today. Will still need to regulate it to loads before the final blue, but it in place and looks very nice.

Usnrigger, what I am looking for is the rear sight conversion shown on page 11 of this King Sight catalog, HSCA - No Title which involves milling the frame at the rear and sharpening up the sight notch, then applying a white (or silver or platinum) outline. After that, a different front sight might be nice as well, but the rear sight is the critical part for me. Please PM me if and when this project might reach your "front burner."

Regards,
Froggie

The Service grips are done minus sending them to a buddy to checker diamond with out medallion style. I just ordered the buffalo horn slabs to do the magna style grips for this thing and they will go up to be checkered as well.

all the frame needs is the Brazilian logo knocked off and put onto working polish all around. I will polish it out for the last time right before it goes to blue.

Sights I will be down the king police night package on this. I have ordered some cutters and end mills to do this. will do this will a good buddy over the summer

Im short a N frame hammer for this thing so im on the search for that, but will still continue to polish, work on grips and complete the "king" night package over next couple weeks and into the summer. So all ill be left with is final fit up of parts once I found a hammer.

A small update. I have the grips going into finish. this is the first coat and this wood was thirsty. once I get the pores filled and the right amount of wipe on coats they will be off to checkering. I have talked with him and we are going to do diamond pattern to try and match factory grip look, no medallions on these.

Once I send the grips off I will final polish and start the express rust blue process and assembly so when the grips get back it will be ready to go.

enjoy.

Pretty much, I was going to sink a set of gold medallions but the cost of just the medallions these day I decided just to checker.

Someone asked what I use for finish. Tru-Oil mixed with water base mineral spirits 50/50

Iggy, that's a great photo to compare to mine, you can really see it's practically the same but the grip difference shows nicely with those two photos
