1917 Question

Can anyone tell me if the S&W 1917 has the pin and spring feature in the yoke that help keep the cylinder open? I have a heavy duty that's missing these parts and if the 1917 is set up the same way it would help me in my search. Thanks.

Yes it does.

The cylinder hold open device or detent was introduced on the very 1st hand ejector, the Model 1896 1st Model .32 HE. By the second model it was dropped from the ‘I’ frames but was used and continued on all the pre war K and N frame HEs.

An old world panache Smith was known for that we won't ever see again.

Check to see that it's not stuck in the hole from crud or rust. This is common but so is lost parts.

Numrich had them in stock, both pin and spring, last time I checked. The pin is easy to make from drill stock. The small spring is a little tougher to source. If you don't have any luck, I probably have a few in my double top secret pre-war N frame parts stash.

Thank you very much for all the help! I went to the Numrich 1917 schematic and parts list. Are these parts N-13/N-14 yoke stop/yoke stop spring or N-45/N-46 cylinder stop plunger/cylinder stop spring? Thanks again. I don't want to end up with the wrong parts.

N 13 & N14, I see N 13 is sold out but that's the easy part to make as ctg4570 said from the base of a drill bit size that slides easily in the hole. Just round off one end.

Questions like that are why I am so happy I have a lathe and milling machine. I can't count how many replacement screws, pins (both fasteners and firing), and plungers I have turned out over the years.
