1948 K22

I don't believe I shared this pawn shop save from about 3-1/2 months ago. S/N K46xxx puts the manufacture date sometime in 1948, if I did my research correctly in the SCSW 4th. All numbers matching including the grips, and it shoots fantastically. $636 OTD. A definite jewel in my collection!

Nice find! Can I ask how you guessed at the manufacturing date? I always thought it was impossible to tell when a gun was made, but you can tell when it shipped. Your K22 could have been made in 1948 and shipped in 1949.

Your “new” K-22 was made very close to the same time as mine but is in much nicer condition... I’m guessing though that you will like it enough to put a bunch of “honest wear” on it. Mine stays in the range box most of the time, ready any time I can sneak out to the range and enjoy it. I’m sure you’ll enjoy yours just as well. Sincere congratulations.

Don, you could be correct. When I looked up the serial number in the back of the SCSW 4th, I assumed it was manufacture dates that they listed. Maybe they're ship dates instead? Not sure, I'll have to look at the heading of the serial number date listings.

Froggie.....thank you. I can assure you this will go to the range with me A LOT. I didn't put near enough downrange on its maiden voyage with me. This was one FUN gun to shoot!

My K22 has a 4 digit serial number (K80XX) and was produced November of 1947......I paid nearly double the price you paid.

I don't know what it is about these K-22s from 1947, -48, & -49, but they seem to show up here with more frequency than any other period. I hope it's not because original owners are dying off, but I wonder if that might be part of the reason. Regardless, all of us who are getting them now sure seem to be loving them as the high quality shooting machines they are. Obviously the workers in the factory at Springfield right after the war took a lot of pride in what they were doing and took the "Masterpiece" designation on the target K-frames quite literally. Both my K-22 and K-38 from those years are among the finest all around guns I've ever owned bearing the S&W label.

Another '48

I'm also in the 1948 K-22 club, with s/n K40403. Paid $500 for mine a couple of years ago at a local gun show, but it's not in nearly as nice condition as yours. However, it is a sweet shooter and very accurate! Enjoy!

There must have been a lot of these made in 1948 because I have one too! Mine is K188xx and I think early 1948.
