The correct style of case depends on when the 44 was shipped. The mahogany presentation case for the 44 Magnum was in use by 1960 and featured a "clamshell" interior. If the 44 Magnum was shipped in 1959, it could be in a mahogany case with a cloth interior (I have only seen a couple of these) or a dark blue case with a clasp style latch (like the one shown in post #14).

I apologize for the quickie pics of the case. The gun fits barrel pointing to the right. The hinges and clasps are screwed on, not nailed. The bottom is similar to hardboard - definitely not real wood.

I just purchased this Model 29 made in 1959 (need confirmation). 4-screw (doah!) Paid full price for it but I've wanted one for a l-o-n-g time and the condition is excellent.

TheTinMan...The case you have is at least forty years newer than your 44 Magnum. It was issued with the Model 29-10 or the 50th Anniversary 44 Magnum in 2006.

Once you find out when your 44 Magnum was shipped, the correct style of case can be determined.

It has been fired. My bet is someone bought it and a box of full house 44 Magnum shells. Went to range, shot a few, said "that's no fun, but she sure is pretty" and locked it up for the next 60+ years.

I have a lettered pre mod 29 4 screw shipped April of 1957. I didn't realize they made them much after that date. Mine looks like the day the gunsmith handed it to the shipping department along with black/blue case in fantastic condition. Paid $4,200 if any one cares. This was 3 months ago. I'm happy with it. Condition in guns is everything!

My pre-29 4 screw...

So back in 1997, I traded a Sig P228 with a buncha mags I had brought back from Europe, for a 4" 4-screw pre-29 at a Colorado Springs gun show. Found out later the barrel was a poorly-installed replacement, originally a 6.5"...the dealer did not know either but he made it right, suffice to say. Later I sent her back to Smith to have the barrel reinstalled and for a mechanical workover. Some years later I found a 6.5" barrel here on this forum; bought it and sent once again back to Smith. Today, she is tight, lovely, accurate, and an "active shooter" mostly with Skelton-equivalent handloads and the occasional Keith. I think I got a good deal...all these years later....I had a Jinks letter, sadly lost, saying she was made in 1957, delivered to Pueblo, CO.

I scrounged through my gun cases. My 29-10 I bought new around four years ago came in a case very similar to TinMan's, my case has a wooden bottom though.

Very nice 4-screw .44 Magnum, it's a real gem. A few years ago I was following one for sale on Gunbroker- but I thought it was a little too pricey considering it had a newer mahogany presentation case. After the auction ended without a sale, I contacted the seller and made him an offer ($1600). He accepted, and I added this nice revolver to my modest collection. According to Doc44, mine (s/n S177963) was shipped in July 1958. I thought it was fair price back then, and I think you paid a fair price for yours. Enjoy!

Nice, Tin Man! Don't worry about how much you paid; just enjoy the revolver. I don't post a lot of things here, or on other sites, because of the prevailing attitude (trying N OT to be confrontational) of "getting a good deal" often as important, or more so, than the firearm itself. I have found the folks here to be a great bunch and I have a lot of respect for all of you. A good deal is a good deal but investing in something that just isn't commonly found, based upon a good deal has more to do with testosterone than appreciating what you have. I have a 1957 and a 1958 pre-29 and I recently bought a 1977 125th anniversary Model 25-3 in .45 LC. Prices were reasonable but, again, that's not the point. The Mdl 25 has the original mahogany box and all paperwork and is unfired (for now). I paid what it was worth. You have found an iconic revolver - good for you!
